Not heard from new nanny!

We recently hired a new nanny to look after DSs, 2.8 and 8 months when I go back to work in December. We've been out of the country for the last few months, due back at the end of the month, and so used an agency to help find a good candidate, mainly because we are looking for a French speaker and we didn't have much success with ads on Gumtree etc and being out of the country made it harder to meet people. The agency found someone who seemed great so we spoke on the phone several times, Skyped, had a close friend meet her in London and after much thought decided to offer her the position so that we had someone lined up rather than leave it until we arrive back in the UK as that would give only 2 weeks before I go back to work. It now seems that neither us or the agency have heard from her for the last 10 days. We've emailed and phoned/left messages but no response and her mobile no longer seems to be working. Of course, she could just be on holiday but it just seems strange for her to completely drop off the radar! If we don't hear soon, i.e. by next week, then I'm thinking that I really need to look for someone else asap but what if she then resurfaces? We also paid the agency a HUGE fee for this candidate which had to be paid within 7 days of her accepting the job despite me telling the agency that I was concerned that something like this may happen. They will replace her but still! Am I panicking unnecessarily??

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Have emailed the agency to ask them to send me some more candidates. Will be super paranoid now!!

But she knew that we were paying a huge fee to hire her and we offered the job and she accepted and was apparently very excited about starting work for us. Does that count for nothing? We had a number of phone calls, emails, interview with a friend etc so there is some personal relationship there. If if is the case though then it looks like we'e had a narrow escape - I wouldn't want someone like that to look after my kids!

I would also assume she doesn't want the job. Sorry! I think she's probably thinking along the lines that she hasn't met you / doesn't know you really so she feels like it's not a big deal for her to drop you in it as there's no personal relationship yet, iyswim.

I would assume she doesn't want you job and tell the agency to send you some more candidates.

Mmm, hadn't occurred to me that something might have happened to her! Quite unlikely I would think, and for her phone not to work as well! More likely she has been offered a better position. If so it's really going to shake my faith in people! I would have thought she could at least have told us.

Oh crap, do you think autodidact?? Even if she's not on-line that much, you think she'd check her emails at least once a week, especially as she is starting a new job on 1st Dec as it's likely we'll be in touch with more details. And not really an explanation for the phone! How long do you think I should give her? I thinking if no news by the end of Monday then we should start looking at other candidates?

That would be awful as well! I'm just an instinctive worrier

I do hope what you're thinking is the case over other possibilities. But perhaps she's just on holiday :)

autodidact · 13/11/2010 21:08

Oh dear- stressathon central. Doesn't sound too promising. I'd leave it up to the agency to sort it- surely this is what you're paying them for? Hope the nanny reappears or the agency comes up trumps for you with a replacement.

Gangle · 13/11/2010 21:06

StarExpat, I was thinking more along the lines that she'd gotten a better job offer and didn't want to tell me or the agency!

Oh goodness. I hope she's ok!
