Independent Midwives survey

The Indepenedent Midwives association is conducting a survey of midwives and mothers regarding a proposal to change the way maternity care is delivered. I have not read it all through myself yet but apparently it is a proposal for NHS midwives to work in a similar fashion to them, contracted by the NHS.

I thought mumsnet is the ideal place to canvass women. Let me know what you think.

I agree pupuce - but there are a number of midwives (including myself) who would go oncall. More than you would think.

Mears - I did wonder.... how feasible their ideas are.... many midwives are not prepared to work on-call.... but if you get to pick your midwife she needs to agree to be in an on-call system. As one who does do "on-call" most of the year... it's a hell of a commitment - which I know people don't understand until they are doing it.... I am lucky that my family is very supportive.
I know quite a few MWs who are not willing to be again on-call (after a few years in the community) and I know many women get turned off becoming birth doulas when they realise that they will need to be on-call for 4 weeks for each birth... and this means no alcohol, no driving too far from "client", no plans for a WE away, unavailable for some events as you always need to be able to "jet off" to your client and be there within 30 minutes.... I disgress..

bump/I've done it.
Always struck me as odd that nhs places such stress on continuity of (antenatal and postnatal) care, but care during labour is with complete stranger.

Mears, do you know when they are going to close the survey? I'd like to mention it in a publication, but production schedules are so far in advance, won't be able to get it in until December... have called IMA but hadn't heard back from them by end Friday.

Good, just thought I might have sent it to lots of people who might have seen it already! I asked them all to forward it anyway. Why on earth are proposals like this not getting more widespread media coverage? Or was there any in June? I will be contacting Scotsman!!!!

The survey is still current I believe - I think it was started in June.

Just done this mears and forwarded it to a few people I know involved in/concerned with maternity services in Scotland. I know of two comm m/w in particular unhappy with the system and would love to work like this, wonder if you know them or how to get in touch, or will all midwives be offered the chance to have their views?
