Caesarean birth live in Channel 5 tonight

sorry to jump in... a friend of my sister's knows prof nikolaides and his view on vaginal birth is apparently 'keep your fnny for f**g'... but he's clearly greatat what he does.

pupuce, does amount of vernix mean baby not yet ready? both my girls were covered and 42 weekers.
loved the programme, made me cry too, remembering both my c/s

Actually I have seen 4 "real" sections (i.e. not for tele!) and they were far rougher.... sorry but you could see this was done for the tele
I have seen forceps used for getting babies out as they were stuck or sheer force. You didn't see the placenta, stitching - up, the way they swob women and all.... this is surgery - not ballet... it can be a hell of a lot rougher and bloodier! But it doesn't have to be....

And WHY did they have to weigh baby ?????? He was a good size but full of vernix so clearly not yet ready...

Nikolaides said that 1 in 4 babies (25%) born by sections sounds about right.... well tell this to Holland and other countries where the rate is still below 15%!
I like him but I thought that you could see he works with high risks cases - which need section....

I also cried when the baby came out.

Can't wait to meet my new little one....

But I do hope not to need a c/s or an epidural, I just don't like any messing about with my body! And this programme only confirmed what I felt before.

I was interested to hear the comments about elective c/s but the doctors steered well clear of that. I suppose it was v. professional for them tomake any comments, but I was just curious to see hwat they would have said...

Yes, have to say although I was clutching my two "war wounds" throughout, I would have liked to see more of the operation (doing everything back up again).

I also thought the foetal surgery was remarkable -the work Prof Nikolaides does to save unborn children is amazing and I thought what he said about c-sections was very reasoned.

Didn't see it but have seen loads before on things like Discovery. Was this any different? And yes, the yellow is fat. I think celebs have flat tummies because they don't eat and have personal trainers the minute they leave hospital. There's nothing about a section per se that would make you have a fat tummy.
re the scar I had a scar there already due to previous surgery on my ovaries, and they just went through it again. It doesn't look any different to before.

As a veteran of two electives I really enjoyed this, (nice to see Sheena MacDonald doing some presenting again after that hideous accident).
Tex, I think most surgeons do lift the uterus out to get a better view - but others believe it is less stressful on the uterine muscles to try and stitch it in situ. I tried not to think about what was being shuffled around afterwards.
What really made me turn white was seeing the spinal being done. Eeeurgh...now I know what my Doogie Howser assistant anaesthetist was up to last August. I did wonder why he kept pummelling my lower back...
And I cried buckets when little Bailey emerged. That moment when they could see all his hair through the amniotic sac...a split second between his old and his new lives. Magical.

I was really interested to see this because I had an emergency section with DS and will probably have an elective with this pregnancy. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be but they didn't show the stitching up bit. I read on another thread that they actually lift the uterus out of the body for the stitching. Anyone know if that's really true???

The yellow stuff was fat. DH said he saw my tummy fat during my section and describe it as a 'little line of chicken fat'. Bless him for calling it little!

Glad to hear about the mini tummy tuck and scar removal with a second section. I wondered if I was going to have two scars ot how it would work.

was the yellow bit fat??? during my 2nd section she cut out all my scar tissue from the 1st section. so i've only one scar and sort of had atummy tuck.

I missed this but when I accidently glanced in the mirrors over the operating table I saw "pink" before looking away quickly and vomiting. I assumed it was my insides. So what colour are our insides?

oh crap crap crap...i REALLY wanted to watch this and i missed it...did anyone tape it? i would love to see what theyve done to me twice! (please please please someone have a tape)

Yeughh! What was all that yellowy stuff in her stomach, before they reached the uterus? I hope my insides aren't like that! I felt sorry for the baby - he looked as though he'd been having a lovely nap and didn't much appreciate being rudely awakened! They were a bit brutal with him after, I thought, slinging him round like a lump of meat.

I have pondered this for ages - how the HELL do the celebs have seemingly washboard flat stomachs after c sections? Seriously though, does anyone know if the plastic surgeons move in after the baby has been delivered?

I've got so soppy since pregnancy I cried when the baby was born!

I might go for it then if they did the lipo and cut away the excess skin.

Is it a myth or do some celebs really get a tummy tuck at the same time?

I wish I could have had a bit of liposuction while they were at it with my c sections. My belly is indescribably horrible.

i'm amazed at the thickness of layers before uterus. i thought it was practically just under skin. shows how much i know. hope dont have to have c/s - due in 6 days

Well it's made me more terrified of having a cs now (and I'm nearly 36 wks pregnant) - makes me wonder how long they would take to cut through all my tummy fat!

Didnt see all of it..just the end gory bit! Having had a c-section myself I found it really interesting despite being squemish! Fascinated to see the baby come out quiet and then scream later on..I expect that is the same with all c-sections but at the time I was wondering why DS hadn't screamed (has made up for it in the 2+ years since then!).

Dont think I would of wanted woman shoving microphone in face afterwards though!!

well i thought it was pretty boring - although i did reconise the midwife who weighed the baby as i had dd at the QMC
