I am dithering between the two...these are the final contenders for the girls name. (boys name George.....sorted!)

Both beautiful. Florence has more scope for nn's. Iris can't really be shortened to anything, but you could call a Florence "flo" or various other things.

loobylu3 · 10/07/2010 20:30

Both lovely names!

Iris Lilian/ Liliana/ Lilith Yvonne would be better as two flowers together sounds a bit twee!

Florence Lily is lovely!

steph1512 · 09/07/2010 20:38

Ilove iris elizabeth...but that has been my top name choice for 5yrs since i was preg with first dd.

Shame it took until my 3rd pregnancy to convince dh and then we had a boy.

If you have a girl i say iris elizabeth

tummytickler · 09/07/2010 18:10

Iris Yvonne is nice!
We call our Iris 'Ishy' which is not really very short! But mostly she gets called Iris!

boodleboot · 09/07/2010 17:33

how about iris lillian? or iris yvonne? or perhaps i should go with iris elizabeth as that sounds divine!

what do u call ur iris for short if anything tummytickler?

Iris is my favourite (my 9 year old is called Iris), by a long way. I know loads of Florences the same age as dd2 who is 5, the last birthday party she went to had 5 out of 30 kids called Florence!

However, Iris Lily sounds awful, so with that combo I would go for Florence. Which is lovely, just not as lovely as Iris!

lilmissmummy · 09/07/2010 14:43

Love Florence. Iris is nice too but just LOVE Florence.

emmyloo2 · 09/07/2010 14:40

God love them both, like LOVE them. If push came to shove I would go with Iris. But both are lovely and I wanted both if I was having a girl.

Having a boy and George is on our after my grandfather.

Doodleydoo · 09/07/2010 14:26

Boodle are you me? DC2 will either be George or Iris!

DuelingFanjo · 09/07/2010 14:24

Iris is so much better than Florence.

telsa · 09/07/2010 14:22

Or Lilianne - which I think is prettier.

jabberwocky · 09/07/2010 14:12

I really like the name Iris but not in combination with Lily. Too floral as another poster mentioned. Perhaps Lillian instead of Lily?

Florence makes me think of the nickname Flo which I personally do not care for.

How about just Lillian Yvonne if you are definitely set on those two already?

Ineedsomesleep · 09/07/2010 14:11

FakePlasticTrees, that just shows how names are regional. I know a few girls called Iris but the only Florence I've ever met is in her 50s.

steph1512 · 09/07/2010 14:04

Not long had my 3rd dc...when i was pregnant we were between the same two names love the shortenings for florence they are all cute.

But if we had had another girls we had decided on Iris Elizabeth. Ive always loved Iris..alothough i had a boy after managing to convince dh thrid time round to go 4 Iris after two girls already.

So we now have Grace, Daisy and Hugo

Love George to

FakePlasticTrees · 09/07/2010 14:01

Iris - because although the name Florence is lovely, since having DS (now 6 months) I have met 3 babies called Florence. Or rather, Flo, as everyone shortens it too.

Iris is suitably pretty and unusual, but not being the sort of name noone knows how to spell!

planner26 · 09/07/2010 13:53

Both beautiful names but I think Iris just clips it - bit more of a classic

Ineedsomesleep · 09/07/2010 13:46

Love Florence, the name and the city.

Iris just makes me think of eyes.

George is a fab name too....

lovebugs · 09/07/2010 13:43

Love Florence, def on my 'if i ever have another baby'name shortlist.
Yvonne is my MIL name, that is not on said shortlist!

fifitot · 09/07/2010 13:21

Iris is mine! So Florence.

telsa · 09/07/2010 13:17

I think Iris Lily sounds a bit silly (sorry for rhyme): two flowers in a row is floral overdose. But Florence Lily is gorgeous. And Florence has such cute nicknames - Flossie, Flo, Florrie, Floss, Renzi

Pinkchampagne · 09/07/2010 13:15

Florence is gorgeous. Not as keen on Iris - makes me think of the eye too!

MrsJohnDeere · 09/07/2010 13:11

Iris

Hedwig3 · 09/07/2010 13:09

Iris.

boodleboot · 09/07/2010 12:33

yup loopy....that doesn't really bother me (i think you just trying to put me off 'your' name!!! )

Both go with the surname - or don't sound hideous IYSWIM

I think Iris goes better with your other names.
