Also, how popular is it, if at all?

What do YOU think of it?

What nicknames are there for it? Maisie?

Its not that common, but there are a few Maireads where I live. I dont think that any of them have nick names, but then if they were being called something like Maisie, I wouldnt think that they were called Mairead, IYSWIM.

Hmmm I dont know what to do, I know a Mairead from old but she pronounced it Marade - I love it like that but not as the website pronounces it.

Getting stressed!

sorry that was meant to say my raid

I have a cousin called mairead - she is Irish and we have always pronounced it my riad. I love the name

Mairead is quite unusual and I think it's more of a Gaelic name. You don't come across it that often in Mainland Scotland. It's pronounced My-redt (with a sharp/thick 'dt' on the end - difficult to explain!!)

Re nicknames - all the Mairead's I know are just called Mairead!!! Certainly not abbreviated to Maisie - completely different name and origin I think!!

Thanks, yeah I found that site too which is what confused me as I dont like it pronounced like that! I thought it was pronounced to rhyme with parade but obviously dont want to use it and get it wrong!!
