Also, how popular is it, if at all?

What do YOU think of it?

What nicknames are there for it? Maisie?

Was someone mentioning purists? I am in Scotland and have strong Gaidhlig ties, we pronounce in My-ratd, soft sounding d-t. Know a woman and she is shortened to My.

valiumSingleton · 07/07/2010 09:07

I like it. It's dated, Mairead sounds like a sensible 47 year old who does flowers for people's weddings or something like that. I wouldn't think of it for a baby. But give it 20 years. 10 if you're ahead of the pack.

ReasonableDoubt · 06/07/2010 20:50

I know a few Irish Maireads. In the Rep of Ireland it seems to be pronounced Marade or Mah-rade. In N.I, it sounds more like Muh-rade.

mathanxiety · 06/07/2010 20:32

Irish Mairead is mostly "Marade" with the soft D at the end (like a French D sound).

I know of a NI 'Myrid' who pronounces it more like 'Myrrh-id' (again the soft D)

Tinasan · 06/07/2010 20:22

Know one (Scottish but with strong Irish roots) - she's a 'marade' - love it go for it!

alexisfaith · 06/07/2010 18:35

I'm from the Highlands (mainland) and we pronounce it My-rid. It's beautiful.

valiumSingleton · 06/07/2010 18:26

to rhyme with Parade

clpsmum · 06/07/2010 17:39

the only one i know is pronounced Marade and her nickname is Mhairi pronounced Marry. I live in Scotland and that is the only one i know of, very pretty name

ludog · 06/07/2010 17:37

Or even Moy rade!
Maryz you describe it well, it's not quite 'th' but it's not a hard 'd' either, somewhere in between.

monniemae · 06/07/2010 16:40

In Ireland it's pronounced differently dep. where you're from - m'raid or muhraid is how my Dublin rellies say it.

waitingforbedtime · 06/07/2010 16:21

Well gibbberish and letthereberock you are giving me hope. I mean, you wouldnt usually think that much about someone else's name would you its only because I asked so if people have pronounced it that way in Scotland Im pretty happy with that.

Maryz the purists?

LetThereBeRock · 06/07/2010 15:52

I'm in Scotland and have known three Maireads and all pronounced their name as Marade, though that may not be the correct pronunciation.

I know one Mairead and am in Scotland.

She pronounces it Marade.

waitingforbedtime · 06/07/2010 14:58

Ooh yes and Raith Rovers!

OP posts:
UltimateNachos · 06/07/2010 14:56

Hmm, to be honest I would think those pronounciations would be wierd - especially in Scotland. Especially as for a Gaelic name, to prounce it 'Maraith' could be interperted as 'my Raith' (Raith is a large roundabout outside Glasgow)- probably going into too much info for you...)
I'm trying to think of names beginning with M that rhyme with Sinead for you? (Think that's the sound you are looking for) - anyone got any ideas?!

waitingforbedtime · 06/07/2010 14:30

Just bumping to ask could I use Mairead but pronounce it Maraith or Marade then or would I look like a fool??

We're in Scotland if that makes a difference!

OP posts:
ludog · 06/07/2010 13:06

Yes, like that.

waitingforbedtime · 06/07/2010 12:56

Like Maraith?

I like that. I like Marade. Im not sure i like my-red.

OP posts:
ludog · 06/07/2010 12:16

Mairead is quite a common name in Ireland, although all the Maireads I know are adults. Over here it is pronounced Marade with a soft almost 'th' on the d.

bigstripeytiger · 06/07/2010 12:15

My-red
