Jasmine is a beautiful name, but personally I don't like "minnie" or "jaz/jas" which are the two inevitable nn's for girls called Jasmine. If you like both of those then you have nothing to worry about though.

BridesheadRegardless · 09/07/2010 09:25

Yep it's Jasmine the plant that smells like that.

I first noticed when staying in an apertment in Rome and it was growing every where I could barely breath it made me want to vomit.

Pretty plant, but my God the smell...

valiumSingleton · 09/07/2010 09:21

That book was amazing. I read it about 20 years ago and I still think about her from time to time. What a great book to have taken a name from!

maria1665 · 09/07/2010 09:20

I named my daughter Jasmine after reading Wild Swans during my pregnancy. The author talks a lot about missing the scent of wild Jasmine in her Grandmother's courtyard. She doesn't mention sperm.

DD is now 11 and loves her name. She gets called Jazzy a lot. My mum hated the name, and said she could never be a doctor or a barrister with a name like that. So I gave her a conventional middle name, to give her the option to swap if she wanted to. But in fact, she is quite studious and the name still suits her. I don't think it will be a problem.

valiumSingleton · 09/07/2010 09:05

Brideshead, is that the plant.... often when I'm walking along outside I think, good gracious, that smell, oh my giddy aunt!

Is that really Jasmine. ??

I like the name though.

KAEKAE · 08/07/2010 23:52

What men are lot going with that have jasmin smelling sperm. What on earth are they eating?

BTW like the name.

bigbluebump · 07/07/2010 09:45

I don't like Jasmine or Jas/Jaz.

EmyLou83 · 06/07/2010 23:00

Hi, I am 29 weeks pregnant and we decided not to find out the babys sex until birth... Jasmine is on the shortlist for a girl... we think its a lovely name :-)

Lougle · 06/07/2010 20:53

DD2's name

Nicknames are endless, and we have lots of fun. She loves it if I come up with a new nickname for her.

LittleSilver · 06/07/2010 20:38

I think it's ghastly.

LynetteScavo · 06/07/2010 18:39

I think your DH's have sweet smelling sperm. You are very lucky.

LuluF · 06/07/2010 18:38

But I think it might be only you two. I'm going to have to do a survey now. I shall let you know my findings!!

But there is also the term Jazz Mags (not sure if that's the correct spelling) and I don't mean the ones about Sidney Bechet or Miles Davis.

BridesheadRegardless · 06/07/2010 18:34

Kreecher!!!! You've noticed!!

Thank God. It's not just me.

You have also conformed my Jiz question.

BridesheadRegardless · 06/07/2010 18:32

I am so bemused that others have not noticed the sperm smell it's so strong, it makes me retch.

Also Jas is a bit too like Jiz, which i think is slang for sperm??

sorry.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 06/07/2010 18:32

Sorry Lynette, I must disagree. They have a definite jizz like aroma. I have spent literally tens of baht paying taxi drivers to take their garlands down in Bangkok.[vom]

LynetteScavo · 06/07/2010 17:43

The plant does not smell of sperm!

The flowers smell heavenly!

I would definitely have called DS1 Jasmine had he been a girl. But I went off it, and didn't consider it for the next two DC.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 06/07/2010 17:34

I really don't like it, we lived in Bangkok and there were so many Jasmines you needed the surname to know who was who. Not sure how common it is where you are though.
Brideshead that is one of the many reasons I don't like the flower.

KnitterNotTwitter · 06/07/2010 15:27

As long as it's not Jazmin or variants it's lovely!!

smother · 06/07/2010 15:23

I don't like Jas either, that's what's slightly putting me off.... but thinking maybe Josie could be a nickname?

flibbertigibbert · 06/07/2010 15:09

Not keen on 'Jas' as a shortened version but 'Mina' is quite nice

smother · 06/07/2010 14:30

MrsvWoolf, why's that?? please expand on your opinion!

No worries, it's a weird reaction granted, but it's a really strong association for me.

I ma the only person who seems to have noticed this though so please disregard me!

smother · 06/07/2010 13:00

Apologies BridesheadRegardless, I didn't mean to sound annoyed - it was a fair comment but just one that I would never have anticipated.
