Too boring or pretty and under-used? Was thinking Kate for short.

Also like Katrina but not sure if everyone will immediately think hurricane!

Yes our book said Greek origin and meaning 'pure one' but said the Kathryn spelling was American but it was an American book so they were no doubt just stealing the old Welsh!!!! Don't know if it would have swayed DH. We are not Welsh but both girls have been born in Wales and it's where we live.

StrictlyTory · 03/07/2010 19:03

'Kathryn is a common woman's given name. The name is spelled several different ways, including Cathryn, Katherine, and Katharine, with Kathryn as the Welsh spelling, Catherine the French and Caitrìona as the Irish form. Its origin is thought to be Celtic or Greek. Traditionally, the name means "pure one'

Pingpong · 03/07/2010 18:02

I love it and out of all the spellings I prefer Kathryn

purepurple · 03/07/2010 13:12

I have a friend called Kathryn, she gets called Kat.
I also have a friend called Catherine, and she gets called Cat.

nowherewoman · 03/07/2010 13:08

I love this name, it feels very fresh and summery to me for some reason!

StrictlyTory · 03/07/2010 13:05

I agree with purplemouse that it's name you'll always need to spell as Catherine, Katherine and Kathryn are very common spellings. I hate the arguement that Kathryn is in anyway 70's or American as it is the way Kathryn Howard, wife of Henry VIII spelt her name and the traditional way in Wales, not some recent American invention! In fact KathArine is the American invention.....

I would say if someone said the name to me i'd spell it 'Kathryn' as I went to school with 4.... all born mid 80's not 70's as was commented and all the children I know are spelt this way! Also the only Catherine I know is 60+ and the only Katherine I know is 27 and known as Kitty

morejuiceplease · 02/07/2010 23:02

Dd1 middle name is kathryn.

It's a fab name.

NoahAndTheWhale · 02/07/2010 22:05

I know people called
Catherine (most ones I know use this spelling)
Kathryn
Katharine
Katherine

Is an overall good name however you spell it

flopsy1974 · 02/07/2010 22:04

Nice name and Kate is great for short.

NoahAndTheWhale · 02/07/2010 21:58

I am Katherine. That is the right way to spell it

pamplemousse · 02/07/2010 21:50

I'm Kathryn, when at the doctor or uni or my parents are reprimanding me (which still happens at 31), Katy to most people or Kate to family and closest friends only. I think having to spell it is sometimes irritating but whichever you choose that would happen...

Thats no help at all is it? Sorry

CarmenSanDiego · 02/07/2010 21:25

No-one likes Katharyne

StrictlyTory · 02/07/2010 17:15

Catherine is very old fashioned.

Kathryn is the very early Welsh version. Beautiful I think.

It good, and the spelling looks just fine to me

However it is a bit of a boring name to live with, though doesn't have too many connotations.

Tis v annoying to have to always spell such a common name though. If you see a name with a different spelling you just don't associate it with you.

Isitmeorisither · 01/07/2010 22:50

Lovely name.

So there's Katherine, Kathryn, Katharine, Katharyn, Catherine, Cathryn.

That's a lot of different spellings for one name! I dobn't know if the spelling matters

that much though.

mathanxiety · 01/07/2010 22:00

I really like the Kathryn spelling, much more than the longer forms.

coffeefestival · 01/07/2010 21:56

I like Kathryn/Catherine etc. with any of the main spellings. Also like Katrina and Karina.

scottywooh · 01/07/2010 21:28

Apparently, Catherine (or variants) is the name most likely to succeed at school. I remember this, cos my dd1's name (Madeleine) came 2nd in the research!

I do like it when people ask my daughter's names and I can say "Katherine and Rachel" and get all these "ooh that's so classic" comments.

catftm · 01/07/2010 18:14

I've always liked my name!

Catherine

AlCrowley · 01/07/2010 18:10

Alexander. sorry

AlCrowley · 01/07/2010 18:08

I have an Aexander to go with my Catherine - two "The Greats"

LilyBolero · 01/07/2010 17:49
