Watching Birthday Time on CBeebies the other day, there was a card for:
Lillian-Rose and Lola-Juliet, one aged 3 and one aged 4.

I think Lillian-Rose could be quite pretty, but wouldn't personally hyphenate. Lola-Juliet just doesn't seem to 'flow' to me.

Thoughts? Any other hyphenated names you've heard which don't seem to flow?

I really like French names of the Marie-Therese ilk, same for French boys' names, although you're more likely to find French girls' names in the British Isles than boys'. Then there are names like John Paul, which are fine, to my ear. Or Anne-Marie, Mary-Clare -- you hear these more in Ireland I think.

No hyphenated names are my taste, my worst is probably Dean-Harvey though as I can't stand either one.

I do not get hyphenated names at all, I really don't.

A good friend of mine has just given her DD a hyphenated name - both names are lovely. But I still don't get it. Will they really always refer to her by both names, and insist that everyone else refer to her by both? She doesn't have a middle name - why not use the second part of the name as a middle name?

Whereas many people like to give affectionate, shorted versions or nicknames to their children, here you have people that insist the whole mouthful of the double name be used. It'd be needlessly formal if it wasn't for the fact that so many hyphenated names are anything but formal. Pixie-Daisy, indeed!

Annemarie is a proper name isn't it? Like Maryann? I can't bear hyphenated names myself. I used to know a Hannah Elisabeth (no hyphen, but both names had to be used - bog off!) Greedy/lazy if you ask me. I know a Jamie-Leigh (girl - why two boys' names then?) and some numpty misguided soul on here wondered about Pixie-Daisy (I kid you not). They are usually two completely uncomplimentary names and just look and sound dumb.

Arrrggh I'm getting irritated just thinking about them! Choose one name and many middle names if you must, but two first names? Why?????

I love to see the names on the CBeebies birthday cards, a good indication of what's popular. I don't like them but I've seen worse than those 2 names in the OP.

I know girls with the following names:

Lucy-May
Emily-Jane
Mary-Lou
Anne-Marie
Katie-Ann
Sally-Ann

Three of them are not so young, being in their 20s. The Anne-Marie now goes by Anne, Katie-Ann now goes by Katieann. I think Sally-Ann is the only one that likes her hyphenated name.

Personally I like hyphenated names, but probably wouldnt use them, as I think they can be perceived as pretentious and silly by certain people.

I suggested Ella-Louise in an earlier forum, and it was very unpopular.

DH and I couldn't agree on a boys name, there were 4 in the equation.

My brother, ever the comic, suggested we use the nicknames of all 4 as

Billy Jo Jim Bob

and I think that still sounds better than some of those listed above!

Of those, I like Ava-Ruby a bit and Rhianna-Sophie a bit more. Don't like the others though.

Some just seem to be a desperate case of 'Mum liked one name and dad liked the other so we'll give both!'

I went to school with a Lindy-Lou. She was bullied partly because of her twee name and changed it to just Lindy as soon as she could.

The vast majority of double-barrelled first names are just horrible IMO.

I mean, do these parents actually expect both names to be used?

Why cant the 2nd name just be a middle name?

Ooh I never considered a hyphenated name.
Very short surname so might work well for our child.
Will have a ponder myself now....

Agree with you that L-R is nice but L-J not as smooth. (Sorry, must stop changing the subject of people's threads!)

Again on CBeebies I saw a Riley-Jay and another day a Riley-Jack also a Honey-Mae

Oh, and I apologise if the girls' mother is an avid MNer - I'm not saying they're awful - just not to my taste.
