Elise - alternatives?

Hello all

Firt child due, and we are choosing names.

We have chosen names for a boy (traditional family names of either William or Matthew - will decide when we meet him).

However girls name is entirely different, and we'd like a more unusual name. I wanted to call our daughter Eleanor Mae (Ella to her friends). However my hubbie reminded me that his cousin's daughter is Eleanor and apparently she goes by Ella, and so he doesnt want either.

I have considered having one first name and hyphenating it - Ella-Louise? (perhaps too long)

Or alternatively I think Evelyn is beautiful, and could be shortened to Evie or Eve.

The other name I love is Elise. However my paternal grandmother is called Elsie, my mum has had a very difficult relationship with Elsie, and I suspect the name Elise would upset my mum (my nan is the sort of person who would assume we've named her first great-grandchild after her and gloat to my mother).

So does anyone have a name similar to Elise, but an alternative spelling. I was considering Eilise??

Thanks all,

Kate

Thanks minipie.

Will have a word with hubbie. He likes names like Claire and Sarah (but I'd like a pretty name for a girl, and as lovely as these names are to me they are not pretty enough), so Eloise may take some persuasion.

Another beautiful name beginnig with a E is Eleri (Welsh). Unfortunately a very good friend has called her daughter Eleri.

My hubbies Welsh, and we live in wales so Welsh names are always great. I also love the welsh name Iola (pronounced Yola), but my cousin is called Iola.

I think everyone pronounces it eh lo eez.

Cuppa tea Jane. I love the name Lois, like Lois Lane from Superman! Not necessary as a first name, but shortened name yes.

Eloise could be shortented to Lois, which does go nicely with our surname.

Thanks all,

Names suggested so far, Eloise is my favourite.

Re Eloise - do you think people would know to pronouce it eh-lo-EEZ?

I love the name if pronounced correctly, but not if pronounced Ell-WAS?

I dont want my daughter to always be correcting people.

Am I thinking too much about this?

There's an Irish name that sounds like Eilish, possibly with a Gaelic spelling though?

Eloise is one of my favourite girls names. Shortened to Lois.

Evelyn is nice but there are thousands of little Evies around, if that bothers you.

Or spell it Elize, so it's not so similar to Elsie, or Eliza? Allise?

Don't like hyphenated names personally, I find them a bit prissy.

Esme
Ellie
Eloise
Alice

All lovely names

I prefer Eloise or Elsa, or Eliza

Elise seems like a hybrid of a few names.

What about Eloise? Such a beautiful name I think.
