I dont know if I can use this name ...

Me and DH have finally decided that our fave girls name is Sylvie (after lots of help on a previous thread)

We both love the name but the problem is our surname

Its one syllable beginning with S and yes it is the most popular english surname!

So give me your honest opinion, can we still have the name we love or is it a no no?

Ds age 11 has a Sophie Smith in his class like the child in those books I think, and it seems to go well together.Its a similar combination to yours I think?!

Sylvie is a fab name, totally agree with posters above.
As a teacher, the children with alliterative names are def the ones I always learn first, and that stick in my mind.

Maybe give her a short middle name to balance out the alliteration, she doesn't have to use it but it's there if she wants it.

think its a great name, and actually think it is a million times nicer than Sylvia, think Sylvia is a very old fashioned and boring name but somehow Sylvie sounds ultra cool and modern i love it

i think its great - a classic french name but not popular like some. I think it sounds more contemporary and prettier than Sylvia (although I like Sylvia I think it's a little older generation)

also goes really well with your surname - alliterative names sound really strong to me.

Think it's a good name, and definitely Sylvie not Sylvia IMO. Rolls better with Sm*th and sounds more modern and fresh.

And agree with susan it sounds funky and memorable.

I love it - it sounds like a fashion designer or BBC reporters name. Rolls off the tongue nicely.

That said, if you love it & really don´t want anything else-it´s not totally ridiculous.

Zadie Smith did alright out of having a similarly alliterative name (original name Sadie)! I like Sylvie better than Sylvia too.

I know your right, Sylvia does sound better with our Surname, but I prefer Sylvie. Im not too keen on Sylvia.
