Sirius ~ cruel or cool?

I think I'm having some kind of reaction to old gentleman names ~ and my short list is getting more and more eclectic/potentially just plain odd.
One of the names I'm mulling around is Sirius. But is it completely cruel to use it ~ can it stand up on its own or are people only ever going to think of Harry Potter/Gary Oldman etc?

Ignore me - I was thinking of Severus - must engage brain today.

Go for it

ShadeofViolet · 17/06/2010 18:26

People will think Harry Potter - and its not a great character really - and in the book he gets called Snivillus doesnt he??

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 17/06/2010 18:21

It's Harry Potter.

Silas is lovely, though.

BabyDubsEverywhere · 17/06/2010 18:15

I LOVE it. i would use this as a first name. but that may noy be much help as i am noted for liking different names...

BouncingTurtle · 17/06/2010 18:11

I'm considering Apollo for a boy or Starbuck for a girl for my next child

I do like Sirius, but yes I would be thinking Harry Potter and Siriously.

I really like Nicholas... but Dh kept saying but it rhymes with knickerless!!

FortunateHamster · 17/06/2010 18:04

Will people still think Harry Potter so much in 15 years though? I quite like it but would be too nervous to use it myself.

cowboylover · 17/06/2010 17:42

I wouldnt instantly think of harry potter but then again im not the best person to ask! I like Xavier and with our sirname its the other way around of professor X from the X-men and everyone sees that a problem but I dont!

susitwoshoes · 17/06/2010 17:37

I like it, and he was a cool character!

strandedatsea · 17/06/2010 17:37

What are the other eclectic/potentially just plain odd names on your list?

LleytonsMummy · 17/06/2010 17:30

My DS1 middle name is Lucius we actually chose it long b4 we had read or watched Harry but got it from the Gladiator film so just as bad!. I actually regret a little not chosing it for his first name but I backed out as was worried he might get teased..I think if you really like it go for it..

dawntigga · 17/06/2010 17:30

Erm, it's a guaranteed to get your child picked on if they don't go to private school name. And if they go to private school (or public school) they may get barked at or Harry Potter'd

I agree with diplodoris

diplodoris · 17/06/2010 17:18

Personally I prefer Saul, Silas or Cyrus.

Cortina · 17/06/2010 15:02

Is it any worse that any other seemingly Harry Potter inspired names that seem to be growing in popularity? Lucius, Luna, Hermione (although this might not be so closely linked)?

I think it's quite fun!

GetOrfMoiLand · 17/06/2010 12:21

To me it is (a) Harry Potter and (b) dating agency. I is a nice name, however the connotations do not help.

Should I have another son I'm using Sirius as a middle name. I love it!

expatinscotland · 17/06/2010 11:40

That's dire.

How about Cyril or Basil instead?

seeker · 17/06/2010 11:38

If you think even for a second it might possibly be cruel, then why do it?

LetThereBeRock · 17/06/2010 11:36

It's awful and yes people will immediately think of Harry Potter.

annasophia · 17/06/2010 11:35

Sirius is cool. I like it.

warthog · 17/06/2010 11:33

dreadful

cyteen · 17/06/2010 11:33

You cannot be sirius!

Seriously though it is very cool but I think would be too problematic.

theagedparent · 17/06/2010 11:32

I like it

BuzzingNoise · 17/06/2010 11:32

It's cool. Very Harry Potter though.
