Sirius ~ cruel or cool?

I think I'm having some kind of reaction to old gentleman names ~ and my short list is getting more and more eclectic/potentially just plain odd.
One of the names I'm mulling around is Sirius. But is it completely cruel to use it ~ can it stand up on its own or are people only ever going to think of Harry Potter/Gary Oldman etc?

Ask your dp to change his name to Sirius. If he will, then you've got a person calle Sirius in your life. If he won't - then maybe think about why.

Wigeon · 19/06/2010 22:41

No child of mine will be called Sirius...because it's the name of the outsourced IT support provider at my work. So I use it in sentences like "Gah, the screen's frozen again, this computer is driving me mad, better call Sirius".

lousouthend · 19/06/2010 19:47

WHen pregnant with my third I was obsessed with having five letters and three syllables to the name. As my girls were already like that. Mad I know. Shortlisted Ariel, Uriel and Elian. Took a long time to register birth as husband opposed but he is now Thomas Elian and it was only about six month later I realised the Elian/Alien similarity. I think pregnancy screws with your head but Sirius sounds cool to me-I did do a quick letter count...

Remus is a good Potter name, and has Roman mythology ties.

TeaBaggy · 19/06/2010 17:43

i love hp and i also love the name...you should just go for it. loads of people have suggested silas as an alternative but that makes me think of the da vinci code. whatever name you choose there will be people who do and dont like it and will remind someone of something. choose a name you love and who cares about anyone else!

kittyonthebeam · 19/06/2010 14:19

dog star

No. Are you serious? Aw, okay that was a lame one. Not sure, up to you.

Rozi77 · 19/06/2010 10:19

I would rather go for Syrus... Syrius will just cause problems

thell · 19/06/2010 09:37

oh bum - that was supposed to be a heart - it looked ok in the preview !

thell · 19/06/2010 09:35

I like quite unusual names...but think this would be better as a middle name.

I ♥ Silas, but DH would never let me use it!

walkersmum · 19/06/2010 08:18

Sounds to much like 'serious' to me lots of teasing maybe. But nice name though. I'd say when in doubt don't do it.

VeryHungryKatypillar · 19/06/2010 07:18

Love it. Nothing wrong with literature inspired names I think... unless its Ophelia (no offence to those with DD's with that name...but didn't she kill herself? )

Mind you, Sirius has an unhappy (but valiant) end in HP...

flopsy1974 · 18/06/2010 21:48

Don't like it I'm afraid.

marge2 · 18/06/2010 21:10

He was a cool character - but still. Think of the Reception playground Mums????!!!!! You'll feel a bit of a prat then!

PANCHEY · 18/06/2010 20:49

PerArduaAdNaueum....I know someone called Atlas....as it happens.....he seems to have come through ok. Bearing in mind that I actually work with people called Atlas, Prince and Harry Potter (yes really) I am still horrified by Sirius...

slushy06 · 18/06/2010 19:17

MrsW I am envious of your mn name

MrsWeasley · 18/06/2010 18:43

I love it but then again I would

It does depend on the type of area you are in there are lots of commetns about being teased. My children school has a wide range of names from the traditional "Anna, Emily! to the "way out there" name and no-one gets teased!

Also I have actually spoken to real people who havent read Harry Potter, of course I think they are crazy but each to his own!

Its a good stong name. I love it.

DillyDora · 18/06/2010 16:57

I like Sirius I have to say but also love Saul as a compromise (sort of?) I think fortunatehamster is right, will people think of Harry P when your Sirius is older?

PerArduaAdNauseum · 18/06/2010 15:54

Blimey - you'd call a child Atlas? So much potential for bullying...

NanKid · 18/06/2010 15:47

It's very silly.

meadowlarks · 18/06/2010 15:44

I do like it but I hear "serious". I think you'd be better off with a similar "-us" name like Silas, Remus, Albus, Atlas or Cassius.

FanjolinaJolie · 18/06/2010 13:33

It makes me smile which can't be bad.

Not good with a speech impediment though...thee-wee-uth

all4u · 18/06/2010 12:29

'Sirius' it's gr8 really but the big prob with names I reckon is that we bestow them before we know the character/looks etc of the recipient! Also we cannot know what other parents are choosing hence teachers always have clusters of the same name cropping up. So avoid a name linked to a star/celeb/sportsperson if you want to minimise this. Many of us opt for the classics because they endure, have some positive connotations and often have lots of variants which can be chosen. Of course a middle name can always be used instead - when starting High School for example. Children seem to appreciate family names as this gives them a link to their identity. My daughter is Elizabeth (classic and my mother's middle name but she is known by one of the diminuitives) and Julia her great grandmother's name whose birthday she shares!

Just13moreyearstogo · 18/06/2010 11:56

Pretty much the only frame of reference people will have for this name is Harry Potter and, for that reason, I'd say no.

JoHoNo · 18/06/2010 11:49

I think you should go for it as long as you can get DH to agree. I loved the old names and wanted Aubrey or Algenon but my DH wouldn't entertain either. Luckily for our marriage we had a DD on whose name we both agreed.
