Enid

Dh was talking about Enid last night.
It was very high on the list for dd and ds, but i had completely forgotten about it.
It seems to fit the plain, simple elegantness of the Jean and Mary type names.
I might be loving it again.
What do you think?
It may come back into style with all the 'E' names about at the moment (Ella, Ellie, Elsie), and I must say I could never use a name that is as popular as Ellie

I like it. Its sweet.

halfawake · 15/06/2010 22:51

Wanted to bring some positivity to this thread as I think Enid is a fab name!

I think it is a bit "kooky" rather than old lady. I think of the girl in Ghost World.

ComeOveneer · 14/06/2010 14:22

I think these threads are rather pointless, as names are very individual, and you will get such a wide array of opinions when you start a thread like this.

Aitch · 14/06/2010 13:06

it's a snippy-sounding little name, quite horrible imo.

Bacofoil · 14/06/2010 13:03

Or Enif? I know an Enif. I think it's French.

seeker · 14/06/2010 12:52

What about Edith? I know a baby Edith!

I agree Ethel is lovely - this is also on our list. Ethel has the plus of Ettie/Etta as a nn which is sweet!

We actually like Mildred too and think Dilly is a nice nn for it.

I may post a long list if I am brave enough!
Maggie is cute, but dh hates Thatcher so that is out, which means no Peggy either.
Nora is cute too, my son goes to school with one so that is out for us,
Mabel - I dont know - for some reason I do not like it, but I am not really to sure why.

jellybeans - I just do not believe children get teased because of there names, sorry! Other things, yes - but not names! Anyway - kids have nothing to associate Enid/Ethel/Mildred with. It is just a name they have not heard before - along woth loads of others. We have a very big mixof names at my dc's schools anyway so I am confident we will be fine!

Nora is a nice old name. So is Maggie.

takethatlady · 14/06/2010 11:44

I love Enid and Ethel - people won't make weird associations once the name refers to your baby, and not to an old lady. I think they're elegant, and they're nice because they're not too fashionable but they're not wacky either (that's just my taste, obviously, but I think that's a nice balance to strike).

I know a four-year-old Mabel and it's lovely on her.

Willabywallaby · 14/06/2010 02:59

It's the name of my play school teacher, I like it.

mathanxiety · 14/06/2010 02:24

Mabel is nicer if you like plain names. Or Dora.

SuziKettles · 14/06/2010 00:07

The worst witch was Mildred..

SuziKettles · 14/06/2010 00:05

I would have said absolutely not until I saw the film of Ghost World which made it a little uber-geeky & cool.

I'd never use it myself, but it's not in the Ethel league I don't think. Much prefer Edith though.

Don't like old lady names at all, child may get teased. Sorry!

funkychunkymunky · 13/06/2010 23:39

Ethel is better but still

I can't ever see her thanking you...

sorry

MrsSchadenfreude · 13/06/2010 23:31

Enid and Ethel both hideous. Harsh sounding and conjure up vision of cross old lady who smells of piss.

So many pretty and unusual names about, why pick something this ugly? If you want plain, how about Jane, Anne, Sarah?

BeehiveBaby · 13/06/2010 22:00

I like it, was 'The Worst Witch' called Enid? No obvious variation that I can think of for a teen who doesn't like it though.

FranSanDisco · 13/06/2010 21:37

I prefer Edith or Eena.

sparkleshine · 13/06/2010 21:34

Eww no. Don't like any of the old style names at all. It's such a harsh sound and not one of the prettiest.
What is she gonna think when she's a teenager?

Have u got a middle name chosen?

takethatlady · 13/06/2010 21:15

I love it. Don't worry about the Blyton thing - my sister-in-law was born in 1984 (before Kylie Minogue became famous) and is called Kylie. It really suits her, she's nothing like Kylie Minogue, and nobody who knows her ever thinks of it for a second. I'd like to persuade my DH on this one because it's unusual and pretty but not cutesy.

mathanxiety · 13/06/2010 20:50

It's as bad as Ethel.

usualsuspect · 13/06/2010 20:34

Its awful ...don't think she will thank you as a teenager

Hedwig3 · 13/06/2010 20:31

LOVE it, and Ms Blyton can only be a positive association!
