Aristotle, Aristotle, was a bugger for the bottle (is my Pavlovian response to hearing that name, dating back to an old philosophy course - I think he died an alcoholic).

I love Greek names - so much meaning, history, potential for good nicknames, rooted in Western culture and history...

How about Troy? Helios? Lyander (meaning 'lion of a man'), Orion, Zephyr? (or Alex, Jason or Aron)

annasophia · 18/06/2010 11:08

Some lovely names on here. I quite like Antonis, Hercules and Zoltan.

DastardlyandSmugly · 18/06/2010 11:07

I was thinking Humungosaur but that's Ben 10 rather than Greek

slushy06 · 18/06/2010 10:44

I really like these names to be honest Aristotle, Archimedes Hercules, and Zeus .

Magalyxyz · 17/06/2010 23:29

I used to go to school with a guy called Cyclops. NO, wait, hang on. It was Mark. But his eyes were really close together.

Fimbo · 17/06/2010 23:25

No, no, they are bear names.

Alex James: They have three sons: Geronimo (born 16 February 2004), and premature twin boys (born 28 April 2006), Artemis and Galileo. They have a daughter called Sable[11] (born 28 August 2008). A fifth child, a girl, was announced by Hello! Magazine in December 2009.

Hector?

Atlas is on my list. I'm a fan of Greek names in general, actually. I like Ulysses, Archimedes and Aramis. I think Hercules is a bit obnoxious though, and when I suggested Atlas before it was made clear that most people would think he was named after a map.

Pasiphae · 14/06/2010 14:38

I like those names.
I do know a little Ulysses and I find that rather great, actually!

donnie · 14/06/2010 12:31

Hasn't that bloke from Blur named all his children in this way? one is called Hercules, one is Galileo and one is Archimedes. Or summat.

MarthaQuest · 12/06/2010 18:32

OMG if that spelling of 'Hurcules' is right, that is one of the most vomit- inducing names I have ever come across!

-no offence Kirsty if you're reading this

MrsSeanBean · 12/06/2010 17:47

Really dannap - didn't know that!

These are Kirstie Allsopp's sons' middle names. Bay Atlas & Oscar Hurcules.

serenity · 12/06/2010 13:07

If you're looking at Greek names it wouldn't be Hercules, it's Herakles (the formaer is the Roman version)

I know a Herakles, an Aries (pro. Ar-ris, nor Air-rees) and a Paris, but they're all actually Greek. I'm not sure it works otherwise.

I asked Dh if anyone uses Adonis, and he laughed but he suggested Antonis (pro as if the t is a d) which sounds similar, but is the slightly easier to live up to 'Anthony'

MrsSeanBean · 12/06/2010 12:34

Some good suggestions, thanks

Yes a shame, I do like Adonis. It would be an unfair burden on him though (although he would naturally be gorgeous, to me anyway!)

You wait until I start on the girls' names list!

lidofabiro · 12/06/2010 12:32

Zoltan or Xanthus are nice.

Have you considered Abderus which means "friend of Hercules"?

donnie · 12/06/2010 12:30

Socrates? Plutarch?

ellieinshock · 12/06/2010 12:30

Adonis?! Ooh la la!

I would probably avoid Achilles. And Oedipus!!!

MrsSeanBean · 12/06/2010 12:27

And Archimedes.

OP posts:
MrsSeanBean · 12/06/2010 12:27

Donnie

It doesn't have to be Greek.

But I also quite like Plato, and Aristotle come to think of it.

I think Cyclops is better. It has a certain edge to it. Or what about Minotaur? Medusa?

Or Odysseus? Virgil? the possibilities re endless. If the only criterion is Greek then how about Stavros?

catinthehat2 · 12/06/2010 12:22

Yes for a pair of deerhounds

MrsSeanBean · 12/06/2010 12:20

The theme is Greek rather than Mythology as such...
