What do you guys think of Stanley?

My DH is super keen on the name and is even referring to the bean as Stanley already.

I think it's really cute for a bump, and even a baby, but I'm not sure I can picture a 7 year old called Stan... is it too geeky/old man? It's very very early days for us but I would love to hear your reactions!

Although I love old fashioned names, I really don't like Stanley. Sorry.

And where I live (London) it seems to be getting really popular aswell.

We have some older style names at playgroup you might like instead:
Hal (love this!)
Bertie (full name is Albert)
George
Billy (full name William)
Theo (full name Theodore)

DD had one in her class she is now 13 - he went by Stan and it really suited him, he was Stan!

I know one age 4 and one aged 3 and it suits little boys too

Loyal follower and promoter of the name Stanley here - I do like it for adults, childre, cats, dogs, etc, great name.

SoLong, I completely completely agree with you. And I can't really imagine leaning over a cot and going 'gorgeous, he looks SO much like a Stan'!

Luckily I have many more months of thinking (and persuading) to do!

The Walter I know is shortened to Walt, I agree Wally could be a bit of an issue though, although still quite cute in an 'I don't care what people say' kind of way!

Don't like it, sorry. I know someone who recently called their baby this and to me it's just soooooo try-hard. I won't say what their other DS is called in case of jigsaw identification(!) but, suffice it to say, it's in the same vein. The parents on the other hand have very, very normal names.

Plus, it's one of those ones where you suspect even the parents don't really like it that much, but they really really want a slightly unusual, aren't we middle-class with our ironic "below stairs" names.

All a bit gimmicky.

It's cute. I quite like it. Other names in a similar vein - Maurice / Frank / Albert / Walter.

I reckon I agree with you guys. It's like some friends of my called their baby Frank and it was really cute i guess, like an east end old man name for a baby, but it still think it's a bit of a gimmick maybe? Like a funny cute joke?

Apols to anyone whose babies are called Frank or Stan!

How on earth am I going to tell DH that I don't like it, when I said before that i did (mainly as I was so pleased that he was getting involved and excited!)

Flat Stanley. You'd be surprised by how children grow into their names though. There are some names in my dd'c class that I raised my eyebrows to on first look, but they suit each and every one of them now. Stan to me is a bit of a farmers name though. A bit like Fred.
