Corin or Rowan

Just looking for some responses on either Corin or Rowan for a baby boy. I have posted on here before about both names and these are the two we are down to! I'm more for Rowan and DH likes Corin more. I am concerned that as they are both unisex names the child could be assumed to be a girl! Would welcome your thoughts and preferences. Many thanks.

Cora is lovely! I am a Rowan, a girl, and older than 25... I get 'isnt it a boys name' a lot though! Or on the phone 'okay Mr Rowan, and your first name is...?'

themammy73 · 21/08/2010 22:39

Well thanks to all who contributed to this thread. I was absolutely convinced I was having a boy hence the dilemma. Of course I ended up having a girl! Interestingly enough, with reference to Ephiny's thread, we ended up calling her Cora. Makes me think had we had a boy we would have gone with Corin after all!

I think they're both lovely names, slightly lean towards Rowan as I like nature names.

Never heard of Corin for a girl (only Corinne/Cora/Corina), yes Rowan is sometimes used for girls, but more often boys in my experience.

How would you pronounce them? I can think of at least a couple of different pronunciations for each one, so people might tend to get it wrong.

JuicyLips · 21/08/2010 16:03

Ah I see. Its a nice name, whether its used for a girl or boy.

BuntyPenfold · 21/08/2010 15:54

I just wondered. My Rowan was always the only one at her school, though I had a Scots friend Rowan and there is a girl called Rowan in a famous series of books.
I don't know any little Rowans, boys or girls.

JuicyLips · 21/08/2010 15:53

I meant the other two, not one two. changed sentance half way through.

JuicyLips · 21/08/2010 15:50

one of them is 4 and one two are 24/25 and 26 (both were in our sixth form as one of them repeated a year) and older one still close friend of my sister. why do you ask?.

BuntyPenfold · 21/08/2010 15:40

What ages are they juicy?

JuicyLips · 21/08/2010 15:35

The Rowan's I know are all boys. I love the name Rowan.

BuntyPenfold · 21/08/2010 15:26

Rowan is a girl's name!
It was hijacked by Rowan Atkinson's mum who has done the name no favours.
I know 4 Rowans, one mine, all over 25, and all girls.

meadowlarks · 20/08/2010 23:50

Have you thought of Coran? It's pronounced the same and looks less like Corinne.

HeavenForfend · 20/08/2010 23:14

I love them both.

Sorry, that's not helpful.

corinsmum · 20/08/2010 23:12

My son's called Corin, he was born end of last year, I do get an odd remark about it but most people do not think it's unisex. Wouldn't really matter to me if they did anyway. Anyway, highly recommend the name!!!

toucancancan · 14/06/2010 16:33

Write both of them down with your surname and see which you like best

Poohbearsmom · 14/06/2010 16:27

i love Rowan!

Rockbird · 14/06/2010 16:06

...although obv I don't think you're naming him after Rowan Atkinson, IYSWIM...

Rockbird · 14/06/2010 16:05

The pronunciation is different for Corin or Corinne isn't it? Corin is snappier...

Love both names anyway. And you can't go wrong being named after Rowan Atkinson

busterk · 13/06/2010 16:48

I love Rowan but i would pronounce it like cow an.
I love it for a boy and like it for a girl.

ReshapeWhileDamp · 11/06/2010 22:18

Corin has never sounded girly to me - just makes me think of Corin Redgrave. I really like it and I don't usually like more unusual names. Rowan is nice but I never know if you're meant to pronounce it in a Scottish way or not.

I really don't like Corinne or Corinna as a girl's name, so I have no idea why I like Corin so much!

Sal321 · 11/06/2010 18:21

Rowan is on our list if we have a boy, but probably only as a middle name due to the boy/girl thing, which is a shame. Do you know anyone with an ambigious name - you could ask them if it is really annoying.

Both are lovely names. Are you and your DH the type of people who wouldn't have minded having an ambigious name?

sedgiebaby · 11/06/2010 17:43

TBH I did think this thread was about a baby girl, but probably because I've not known boys with these (unisex) names.

Personally I think i prefer many unisex names for girls over boys. I don't see as much of a problem with girls names sounding a little stronger/masculine than I do for a boys name sounding/being regarded as more feminine.

themammy73 · 11/06/2010 16:20

Brilliant alexisfaith! Oh dear. I think Corinne (the female version) has ended up a myriad of spellings, both legitimate and created! My niece went to school with one spelt Koren but that's probably a whole other thread....

alexisfaith · 11/06/2010 16:10

Corinne is female, Corin is male. Confusingly, I read that there's a Big Brother Jordan-a-like contestant called Corin, who is female.

themammy73 · 11/06/2010 16:06

Thanks so much to all of you for commenting. I can see the discussion goes the way of my own house! I am worried about Corin being mistaken for Corinne, which someone mentioned here, otherwise I think it is a lovely name too and wondering whether to overlook that and be a bit daring anyway! Hard too as I like Rowan so much as well. Decisions, decisions. We'll have to see which one he looks like when he appears. Many thanks again.

Rowan for a boy

Corin sounds more of a girls name
