Hello all! Not even pregnant yet as you may have seen from the JS forums but we have been thinking about names already and have been really drawn to french boys names but could they also end up sounding pretentious?

Ideas/Opinons/Favs please MN!

Sebastian
Xavier
Louis
Francois

Thanks all x

DH is French, our DS (3 months) is called Thibault Felix, pronounced Tibo.

My FIL is called Francois, think it's that older generation really, we know no-one our age called it.

Our back up names were Loic, Ludovic, Antoine.

Maybee · 20/06/2010 17:27

We have a Louis aged 10 months Mathieu aged 7 dh is French Canadian. I love Christian and Christophe.

Adair · 20/06/2010 17:19

I know a French Louis (under 5).

I love Emil too, and Leon. But we/kids have a French-sounding surname (though are not French) so dh vetoed...

Is Elliot French?

frakkit · 20/06/2010 17:08

I would choose Xavier from your list

Louplet · 20/06/2010 16:58

You could go for a more general european name like Gabriel or Rafael. I chose Gabriel for DS1 partly because it worked in lots of different languages.

Aurélien I loved when I heard of it

Thanks all, I wont mention Baptiste is popular as I have said a definate no to Jean-Baptiste!

FingonTheValiant · 14/06/2010 15:38

Maxime is fab, French dh really wants it.

Francois is not that common any more in France, and is seen as laughably old fashioned. Still fairly common in the feminine form though.

Louis is definitely on the rise, I know them aged under 5 and over 70 I would say.

There are a surprisingly large number of Kevins and Brians walking around France, it was very trendy to give your children English names about 25-30 years ago according to dh.

Maybe have a look at the names from Brittany, like BarkisIsWilling suggests. They are super trendy in France, and often can be similar to Welsh names.

Armand, Bertrand, Eudes, Ferdinand, Corentin, Basil, Baltazar, Ludovic, Bastien, Baptistin, Isidore, Auxence, Baudouin, Mathurin, Titouan, Tanguy, Gautier, Gabin, Mayeul, Gonzague?

BarkisIsWilling · 13/06/2010 19:01

Go native and call him something like Louis-Francois

How about Yannick or Loic?

Magalyxyz · 12/06/2010 16:39

Pierre too actually. That doesn't seem too unusable for a non-French person.

Magalyxyz · 12/06/2010 16:38

I like Arnaud. That's one of the few I would have considered using.

Kevin is popular in Italy too

ChickenInABasket · 12/06/2010 14:17

Love love Emil (e)!

Sebastian
Xavier

Like both, not really keen on Louis or Francois. Have never known any french Louis's or Francois, you don't really want to give them a hideously unpopular name in France if it's french I'd say. I knew a French Kevin (would be early 30's now) which I always found a bit odd, although not to the French.

Think Sebastian is the best cross over name, but then I really like the name and love Seb.

thirtysomething · 11/06/2010 19:10

Antoine and Pierre are my all-time faves

Louis and Sebastien are both fine in both languages so may work best if you have no French connections though.

claire196 · 11/06/2010 19:04

Emile

ilovemydogandMrObama · 10/06/2010 22:36
