Saskia

I have just read on another thread that this name is considered "chavvy".

Now, I'm not a categoriser, but wondered what other people's perception of the name is.

Thanks.

I never thought of Saskia as chavvy. I only ever met one in my life, she was in my sister's class at school and I thought it was a very cool name.

MimiSas · 22/08/2010 15:47

In Dutch (where the name comes from) the first 'a' (Sas-) is pronounced like the first 'a' in Barcelona.

lidofabiro · 09/06/2010 20:26

Sass-kia

LuluF · 09/06/2010 18:37

Sass-kia

IWouldNotCouldNotWithAGoat · 09/06/2010 18:19

do you pronounce Sass-kia or Sarss-kia?

skihorse · 09/06/2010 03:51

I think it's lovely. I've only known two (both Dutch) - one of them frighteningly posh.

n.b., I've worked & lived in The Netherlands for 10 years and have only met one in the line of work... so not overly common here either.

MagalyZz · 08/06/2010 22:53

I don't think it is considered Chavvy I think one poster took a dislike to a poster who has a child called Saskia, and defended the name when it was slagged off. That poster went a bit bananas and said loads of weird stuff, took some really offensive name-changed, exploded, disappeared....

Shaz10 · 08/06/2010 22:51

I think that was my fault, but I've been misunderstood. I said that there was a chav on Big Brother called Saskia. And suddenly everyone said that we were calling the name chavvy.

zozzle · 08/06/2010 22:49

Unless it's Prudence, Henrietta or Beatrice, it'll be chavvy according to MN

chaostrulyreigns · 08/06/2010 22:44

Ahha - that's the one.

I've just been watching Saskia Reeve on 'Luther' and she's quite posh (not in that though) and Vanessa Feltz has a Saskia, if I remember correctly.

When we had just named her there was an Eas'enders connection that people kept mentioning. Now we don't watch it so I started to get a bit fed up.

Had a great response though - "Nooooo, she was Rembrandt's wife".

I like Saskia and would not consider it at all 'chavvy'. If anything, I think of it as 'posh'.

Missus84 · 08/06/2010 21:46

I'd have thought of it as posh if anything - I've known too, one posh and one Dutch.

LynetteScavo · 08/06/2010 21:44

I saw that thread too, OP.

A few years ago there were 2 Saskia's on Big Brother, with I think may have lead some people to think it's "chavvy", but I really don't

The only RL one I've met is 5 with V' posh parents.

KickArseQueen · 08/06/2010 21:40

Love it, was by "girl" option, but I had a boy..............

Ok. Apologies for the Chat by stealth. but the reason I ask is I have a Saskia too.

We chose it as we thought it was classless.

EleanorD - mine is nn Sassie (although she's rebelling now and insists on Sassy!) which I don't think is harsh.

Would also think of it as posh rather than chavvy. It's on my shortlist so I'm v.keen on it! My only concern is whether it sounds too 'harsh' for a baby girl - am mulling it over!

I would actually think of it as posh!
Probably because it featured in a Joanna Trollope book with Aga cookers and the like.

it sounds like the name you would give to a german shephard bitch

LetThereBeRock · 08/06/2010 18:50

I don't think it's at all 'chavvy' but I don't like it.I think it's a rather ugly name.
