I love the name louis - but couldn't use it as we already have a nephew lewis & it is just too similar!

DilysPrice · 08/06/2010 18:49

I'm also in the "not a proper name" camp - go with Louis.

usualsuspect · 08/06/2010 18:45

I have a Louis ..pronounced Lewis [ignorant]

TheCrackFox · 08/06/2010 18:02

I have a Louis (5yrs) and no one has ever got his name wrong.

DomesticG0ddess · 08/06/2010 17:54

mathanxiety, I would say that 95% of the UK would pronounce it with an "S", at least. I agree no pandering to the ignorant but not sure I'd want to be constantly correcting them!

Don't like it and cannot explain why!

usualsuspect · 08/06/2010 17:01

I know 3 louis's all pronounced lewis ....

mathanxiety · 08/06/2010 16:58

I can't believe there are people who don't know Louis is pronounced Louie.

I think it's a lovely name, and I would spell it Louis -- no pandering to the ignorant

ludog · 08/06/2010 14:40

I know two Louis and neither of them have ever ( to the best of my knowledge) been called Lewis. Love the name BTW.

lidofabiro · 08/06/2010 13:35

I don't particularly like it I'm afraid, sorry.

lamplighter · 08/06/2010 12:37

Love, love, love Louis (Theroux) and the name

SylvanianFamily · 08/06/2010 12:30

My DS middle name is Louie. (Ergo - I like it).

Mind you, my mum huffed and puffed for months about how it wasn't a 'proper' name like that - so depends how much that attitude'd annoy you. You could always christen Louis but always sign him off as Louie iyswim.

Ineedsomesleep · 08/06/2010 12:30

No, but its not my baby. If you like it then use it.

DomesticG0ddess · 08/06/2010 12:29

Oh yes, Louis Theroux, but then people just hear his name, they don't read it out on the school register, at the doctors, etc - I think I would be forever correcting people, although Louie does look like a little boy name, not a grown up name....

I like Leon, but not Wolfgang.

OP posts:
belgo · 08/06/2010 12:26

What about another 'animal' boys name? Leon and Wolfgang are my favourites.

Don't worry about Lewis; everyone knows hoe Louis Theroux pronounces his name.

Astrophe · 08/06/2010 12:25

I think with Louis you'll get "Lewis", which has a very different (IMHO, not as nice) sound to Louie

DomesticG0ddess · 08/06/2010 12:24

Thanks for your comments - yes, I had thought about the spelling, but I know a guy called Louis ("Lewis", so I just assumed that everyone would say "Lewis".

Hedwig, I did threaten to use Ursula anyway....

OP posts:
LetThereBeRock · 08/06/2010 12:23

I don't like it.

Hedwig3 · 08/06/2010 12:06

Ursula Audrey is great, use it anyway

I like Louie, prefer Louis spelling but would worry that people would pronounce it 'Lewis' and that would annoy me!

DrSpechemin · 08/06/2010 11:58

I love it - it was on my shortlist - spelt it Louis though.

JaxTellersOldLady · 08/06/2010 11:57

I know a little boy called Louis and my dog is called Louis. It is an ok name.

belgo · 08/06/2010 11:57

Louis is lovely.
