Baby Name Rules

I'm pregnant with DC2 and have started having name conversations with DH. I've realised that I have some 'rules' that names must comply with and wondered if other people had the same/different rules - or thought that mine were bonkers...

1, no alliteration i.e. Martin Morris is out

2, no rhyming i.e. Doris Morris is out

3, no nicknames on the birth certificate i.e Nicola not Nicky

very similar to most above plus:
must not be a common dog name/the name of a dog I know (Lucy, Susy, Lily, Ellie, Norman, Stan, Jack, Jasper, Jimmy, Sam, Dylan). I do know more people with dogs than with children though.
And must not rhyme with any of my dogs' names: Maisy being one which rules out Daisy.

  • only one name (no middle name)
  • "classic" name
  • not in top ten of uk and home country
  • pronouncable in uk and home country
  • no family member with same name
  • no shortened/nick name
  • not ending with same sound as surname starts

I like having an alliterated name - gained it on marriage, but I think it might be hard to give up if you changed your name on marriage.

The only rule I have so far is that for a girl only one name can end in a "a" sound and one in an "ie" sound - so not "Amy Sophie" or "Clara Flora" as examples.

our bonkers rules are;
mustn't contain the letters R, Z, W, X, Y, or TH,
mustn't start with H,
mustn't end with O, E, D, K, P
etc etc
but that's because DH is Italian and don't want half the family pronouncing it wrong, ie i can't stand the english pronunciation of italian names ending in O like 'Fabio'.

Our rules were:

  1. Easily recognisable as a name: easy to spell and pronounce
  2. No building materials (DH's rule: I liked Clay, Brick and Steel)
  3. Last letter could not be 'N' (surname starts and ends with 'N')
  4. Unusual enough that DS will be the only one at school, and likely to be the only person by that name that most people know
  5. Nothing silly, wacky, trendy or pretentious

  1. First name had to be 2 syllables
  2. First name could not end in same sound as the beginning of last name
  3. Names could not be shortened. I like to use their full name
  4. No reason to believe it would crossover from a boys name to girls (although ds1's has a bit anyway)
  5. Nothing that could be turned into a jokename

Just discovered DH has a rule that I didn't know about (which explains some of his more random name veto's!)

Middle name must be shorter than first name!

Love this thread - might adopt all your names although I suspect that there might not be any names left for my future DC's....! will just have to call them 'thingie' and 'you over there'

Actually have just thought of another of my rules no 'brand names' for childs name!

I like alliteration but my Dh's rule is that the total number of syllables in the name has to be a prime number!

our DD has 11 in her name. The next one has to aswell!

No rhyming.

No unfortunate initial combos.

No repeating initials.

No using names of living family members - DD has a late family member's name but I would feel weird re-using names. Lots of names had to be dismissed because they were cousins etc.

No using names other family members have dibs on. Might sound weird but DSis had her heart set on using a particular name, so whilst I liked it too, I wouldn't have used it.

Gosh I had some rather complex rules too:

  1. Nothing beginning with N as we both do
  2. Nothing beginning with K - don't like it
  3. Nothing ending in a vowel (surname starts with one)
  4. Wanted 3 syllables to balance 3 syllable surname
  5. Wanted a 'th' in the name as think it sounds gentle
  6. Wanted a name that would suit a baby, child and adult
  7. Nothing faddy
  8. No ex-boyf/girlf's names
  9. Nothing tricky to spell or pronounce
  10. Nothing associated with any of the 1000 odd naughty kids I teach or have taught.

There were more.
Safe to say, it was a bloody nightmare......

hmm i def had name rules.

  1. no girls names that can be shortened to a boys name - ie theresa/terri etc
  1. no names that make it sound like you have two last names and no first name ie taylors adams
  1. no names mispelled for effect ie lilli instead of lily

I like alliteration. But it depends on the letter.

Daisy Donald and Gideon Gillespie sound great (imo) but Moses Martin sounds terrible. Gwyneth put Moses and Martin together. Any other letter's alliteration is going to sound better than that.

I always thought the name Daisy was from the flower, like Lily & Poppy!

Mine are..

  • nothing try hard poncy
  • no nick names
  • nothing too biblical sounding as we're not religous
