How do I convince DH to like the name Betty?

I just can't let go of this name! I really like it, but neither of us likes Elizabeth. He says it reminds him of a fat middle aged woman and keeps repeating 'Ugly Betty' and 'Sweaty Betty' . How can I convince him that it is a very cool and fab name?

We can't really agree on many others. So far we have on our list:

Mimi
Orla
Ava
Marcy (just saw this on another thread and we both like it)
Beatrice

But none of these say 'this is the one' to me. He also likes Daisy but I have firmly vetoed that. That is his sole contribution to the discussion though, Daisy. All the other names I have come up with.

I like Betty so much - help me convince him, or help me come up with something I like as much!

If he really doesn't like it let it go. You have to both like your choice which means compromise.

MagalyZz · 06/06/2010 15:31

Eurhg.

I love Elizabeth, Beth, Eliza, Elsa..... I could get behind Betsy, just (what Denise van Outen just chose). But BETTY is horrible.

In answer to your question I think Betsy sounds a bit feistier, there's a bit more to it. Betty makes me think of a woman born in the year 1930 but I'm picturing her as she is NOW. Betsy makes me think of a girl born in 1930 too perhaps but I'm picturing as she was in 1950 cycling to the local dance and wearing an outfit to die for with a 24 inch waist.

BONKERS????? perhaps. But thats why I like Betsy but not Bettyhotpot

You all have no taste! (Except thesecondcoming and gigataur ). As a rule I don't like old lady names, I just think this one is very cool and cute.

Ok, apart from Beatrice (which is a bit ) do you like any of the other naems on my list?

How can people like Betsy but not Betty?

My personal opinion is that you can't convince your dh to like it as there is nothing you could do to persuade me to like it.

Its an old lady name. I don't like Old Lady names (have never got the Ruby/Lily/Effie type names). So you could never persuade me, I'm afraid.

It has to be something you both love!

TinaSparkles · 06/06/2010 14:38

My friends middle name is Betty and we snigger over it (she is 37 btw) as it comes up on the company's purchasing system where EVERYONE can see it.

She is mortified by this. Don't do it, I'm with your DH on this one.

Um, it's not cool and fab...!

Sorry - to me, it's not - I can totally see why your DH doesn't like it, and I wouldn't be persuaded into it either. Betsy is marginally preferable.

I don't think you can talk your OH into any name - it generally has to be one you both genuinely like/love.

PansAndNoodles · 06/06/2010 14:30

How about Hattie (for Harriet). Or Hettie - I think that might be Hester?

wonderingwondering · 06/06/2010 14:30

Didn't mean that to sound like a command! Was just a suggestion...

kalo12 · 06/06/2010 14:30

bethan could be shortened to betty
or elspeth maybe

dizzydixies · 06/06/2010 14:29

I'm with your DH on this one sorry!!! Betsy cute but Beatrice SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much nicer

wonderingwondering · 06/06/2010 14:29

Would you use Betty on the birth cert? I actually don't like shortened names as formal ones - use Elizabeth (I prefer Elisabeth), Beatrice, Margaret whatever, and call her Betty if you like. Any names with a 'et' sound in it could reasonably be shortened to Betty for a young child.

Gigantaur · 06/06/2010 14:28

i love the name Betty. I tried convincing Sil to use but they refused.

Ineedsomesleep · 06/06/2010 14:28

Just tell him that if he can't be bothered to come up with his own list she will be Betty and that is that.

Had the exact same problem with DH. Its easy to say no to your choices but too much bother for them to actually think of names themselves!

Poohbearsmom · 06/06/2010 14:26

I actually think Daisy is lovely...
From your others i love Ava and like Beatrice that was top three with my little sister along with Rebecca but she got Dorothy in the end

Lizzzombie · 06/06/2010 14:08

DP calls me Betty.
I am not keen on it as I had a mad Auntie Betty.
Betsy is much prettier imo.

If he doesn't like it, he doesn't like it. Dp didn't like lots of the names I liked - I just had to compromise - and so did he.

Beatrice is lovely.
Daisy is much nicer than Betty imho.
How about Beth? Or Meg?

usualsuspect · 06/06/2010 14:03

Betty is an awful name ...I'm with your DH

belgo · 06/06/2010 13:49

If he doesn't like Betty and neither of you like Elizabeth, then forget it! Everyone will think it's a short version of Elizabeth.

Beatrice is a lovely name.
