Starting to think about baby names, not finding out the sex so both to consider. Let me know if there are any you think are awful, or great, or if you can think of any horrid nicknames they'd be faced with! Surname begins with 'L'. Thanks.

Girls

Georgia
Florence (Flo)
Jodie
Maya
Lyra
Sofia

Boys

Benjamin (Ben)
Frederick (Freddie)
Edward (Ted)
George

I love Lyra and Sofia. I did like Jodie years ago but that Marsh girl has put me off. What about Joely instead?

sedgiebaby · 07/06/2010 19:33

I like all of them. Joley or Jolie over Jodie but I don't think it is bad! Lyra is really nice, new for me but modern and pretty sounding without being too frilly a girls name.
Out of the boys Frederick I think.

All the best with choosing

Eglu · 07/06/2010 19:30

Only one I really dislike is Jodie. I think it has a harsh sound to it.

loobylu3 · 07/06/2010 19:23

Girls

Georgia- okay
Florence (Flo)- lovely!
Jodie- dislike
Maya- lovely!
Lyra- dislike
Sofia- okay

Boys

Benjamin (Ben)- lovely classic
Frederick (Freddie)- ditto- not too keen on Freddie though
Edward (Ted)- ditto
George- ditto

I like all of your boy's names!

lidofabiro · 07/06/2010 18:02

Do you mind that George Edward L. would have the initials GEL ?

hmmSleep · 07/06/2010 17:55

Thanks for all your opinions, still no closer to deciding though, think I'll have to wait and see what baby suits when it arrives!

At the moment I'm edging towards Georgia Florence L. or Sophia Florence L. for a girl and George Edward L. for a boy. But that will probably change in 10 minutes time!

I love Florence and Lyra out of your girls names, I'm quite a fan of alliterative names, ds2 is Hugo H_.

Boys wise I'm sorry to say Ben always reminds me of a dog's name (despite it being my lovely nephew's name). My favourite from your boys names is Edward (Ted) - traditional but a little unusual these days, and Ted sounds pretty cool I think.

Good luck, dh and I were always fine on boys names but struggled like mad with girls. Lucky we have 2 boys I suppose

CristinaTheAstonishing · 07/06/2010 17:00

Great choices, although not too keen on Jodie on its own, maybe short for something.

Georgia, Florence or Sophia for a girl.

Frederick, Edward or George for a boy.

Wanderingsheep · 07/06/2010 07:05

Girls

Georgia - lovely
Florence (Flo) - also lovely but the fact that they might one day become an Aunty Flo puts me off (euphemism for period).
Jodie - don't like

Lyra - ok
Sofia - love

Boys

Benjamin (Ben) - love
Frederick (Freddie) - like it
Edward (Ted) - ok

I have a Maya and a Ted! Great minds

thumbwitch · 07/06/2010 02:59

Boy names all fine.
Girl names - I loathe Jodie. Really really do.
I also don't go a bundle on FLorence - am behind the times with this crumbly-name revival as I still remember ancient great aunts with the names so to me they don't belong on little babies (yes I know they grow up but still)

Lyra is probably quite a common new name - don't know - have you checked the baby name stats for the last few years?

I prefer Sophia as a spelling unless you are from a country that doesn't use the 'ph'; lovely name though.

mathanxiety · 07/06/2010 02:36

Just Sofia and Benjamin -- I love Lyra, though, and wonder if your DH could have his arm twisted.

bibbitybobbityhat · 06/06/2010 23:30

I like all of the boys names, especially Edward and George.

Of the girls names, I particularly like Florence and Lyra.

Don't like Maya at all.

TotallyWipedout · 06/06/2010 23:28

I don't love any of them - though I like them all perfectly well, with the sole exception of Jodie, which I really, really dislike.

bunnygirl80 · 06/06/2010 23:25

I love Lyra, but not sure about how it would sound with an L surname.

I also really like Georgia and Maya. I'm realy not keen on Jodie.

Definitely not a fan of Freddie - it's cute on little boys but I don't think it suits anyone over the age of 5, but if they revert to Fred or Frederick they're stuck with an old man's name

The other boys names are all nice - Benjamin is my favourite- it's on the list for my bump.

Hedwig3 · 06/06/2010 21:46

I think there are plenty of Edwards in the world now with all the accompanying nicknames!

George is a great, underused name.

Like Frederick too.

YellowRoseofTexas · 06/06/2010 14:49

Lots of nice names on your list!

Girls

Georgia - really love it - one of my fav girls' names. Reminds me of the artist Georgia O'Keefe.
Florence (Flo) - feel it might be used a lot this year due to Florence and the Machine?
Jodie - boring
Maya - nice. sounds a bit exotic? (in a good way)
Lyra - really nice! unusual yet easy to say and spell.
Sofia - I like it, and its meaning.

Boys

Benjamin (Ben) - love. Sounds masculine yet kind. (not sure why!)
Frederick (Freddie) - oh no, not Freddie...
Edward (Ted) - I like Edward and Ed better than Ted. Ted sounds nerdy to me.
George - yep, love. cute on a boy, nice on a man.

Psammead · 06/06/2010 14:44

Re: dental floss - not really! Reminds me more of candy floss! Which probably ought to lead to dental floss :P

stressheaderic · 06/06/2010 14:43

Not Jodie. All teenage Jodies are unruly.
Like Maya and George best (see what I did there).

Ineedsomesleep · 06/06/2010 14:37

Love all the Boys names. Might be slightly biased as DS is George.

Girls

Don't like Jodie or Lyra. Like Maya although it is quite popular and Florence.
