I neither dislike/like these names but a friend of mine is considering all of these for her son due next month. Why do so many people hate these names, she asked my opinion but I said I wasn't sure, but had got the impression from mumsnet in the past that these names should be avoided??

Everyone is entitled to their opinion! And it is a "Talk" forum!

dizzydixies · 06/06/2010 12:52

what a bunch of judgey sods you are

OP - just tell her they are not to your taste and be done with it - NOT your child to name

ffs

Poohbearsmom · 06/06/2010 12:20

Well im irish so dont understant the "chev" thing... But didnt like these names sorry... Haydon would be the best imho but i know it as a surname

usualsuspect · 06/06/2010 12:05

I'm 51

5DollarShake · 06/06/2010 12:02

I also went to primary school with a Hayden, and I'm 36.

He was a bit of a reprobate, admittedly.

usualsuspect · 06/06/2010 11:59

I went to school many years again with a boy called Hayden ..not an asbo in sight ..in fact he was the smartest boy I ever knew

CantSupinate · 06/06/2010 11:54

Haydon is a family name for us (surname of DH's great grandmother) -- I quite like it and might have used it if we had another DS .
The others not my preference, but still much nicer imvho than many traditional choices.

candyflossbaby · 06/06/2010 11:43

I like cailin as a name? I don't have images of Asbo children running round. Surely all classes use all names at some point?

I think they are trendy and so will outdate very quickly. I like Hayden and Caelan but not to keen on Cayden and Jayden. Surely they will be shortened to jay and Cay aswell.

usualsuspect · 06/06/2010 09:55

I wonder how many chav comments this thread will get? maybe thats the point? borrrrrrrrring

5DollarShake · 06/06/2010 09:55

The Ignatius and Tarquin type names come in for just as much flak on here as the Jaydon/Caydon/Haydon names...

It's just that it's perfectly OK to be scathing about supposedly 'posh' names. On the other hand, it's most definitely not OK to be scathing about, for want of a better word, 'chav' names.

Ineedsomesleep · 06/06/2010 09:37

I prefer more traditional boys names. To me these names sound a bit made up and very much of the time. In that way it reminds me of Kevin.

Perhaps you could suggest Aidan which is less common and has a bit more history behind it.

Romilly70 · 06/06/2010 09:23

just trying to make the point

usualsuspect · 06/06/2010 09:22

I like them ...

lionheart · 06/06/2010 09:22

Pikey?

How classy.

Romilly70 · 06/06/2010 09:15

completely pikey names.

ArseHolio · 06/06/2010 09:12

They are comon in both senses of the word.

Most defiantly to be avoided.

FionaSH · 06/06/2010 09:01

Its just chavtastic, that's why people don't like them.

Candy
How long have you been reading mumsnet?? As forums go this is the one where people swoon over names like Ignatius or Hector. They say they Don't know why they don't like these names. IMO the truth is that most people on here do not like names that are used almost always by what they perceive as the lower orders.

annasophia · 05/06/2010 22:26

I'm afraid I have to agree that Jayden, Hayden and Kayden just don't sound good. Not sure why, but I really dislike them.

CornishKK · 05/06/2010 22:12

Perhaps she could consider Keinan, Weinan or Schmeinan as alternatives.

I don't like the names, sorry, I'll be honest and say it's because I'm a snob and they just sound like the names of ASBO kids.

Of course, IRL, if it was my friend I'd just smile and agree that they were lovely.

bigbluebump · 05/06/2010 22:07

I can't explain why, but I really do not like Jayden/Cayden/Shayden. Honestly, I just simply do not like their sound at all. Nothing to do with any image of a certain type of boy, I just don't like the sound.

But we all have different tastes and some people will certainly not like my choice of names (or fashion, wall colours, food etc) either.

twolittlemonkeys · 05/06/2010 21:54

I have to say I get a similar mental image to secondcoming - sorry. I really prefer names that are a bit more traditional.
