Orson (As in Welles)
Otto
Ambrose
Edmund
Arthur
Somerset (Probably as a MN)
Atlas (Greek god, not a map)

And, I'm just going to throw this out there...Judas as a middle name. Clear your mind of the betrayal connotation and it's actually quite nice. Too cruel?

Atlas's brother could be Dictionary. Dic for short. And Thesaurus could be nice for a girl - Thea for short.

Love Otto and Atlas.

Judas best avoided IMO. How about Jude as an alternative?

seeker · 12/06/2010 07:33

Because if she called her child Judias, people woud think she couldn't spell Judas.

bev2102 · 12/06/2010 00:42

If you really like the name Judas then why not add an i ie Judias. Sounds the same without the connotations.
I love the name Arthur. It was my late Grandpa's name and is trendy again (as are alot of the old fashioned names). I named my DS James Darren Arthur, all family names. My DH wanted our DS to be called Darren after him but I personally didn't like the idea. To me it felt like saying our DS was DH's mini me rather than a person in his own right! DH is called Darren James and if I were a boy I would've been James Darren! Also James and Arthur were my Grandfather's names so big family names! Lol

I would def think about putting a more 'traditional' name in there as a just incase name so that your DS can use it if he's embarrassed about an unusual name.

Having said that I love the idea of several names. Any further children we are lucky enough to have would all have 3 names to be fair (unfair giving one child 2 names and a sibling 3,4 or more!).

Atticus Louis Caleb Tobias Somerset sounds ok. Like them but not Atticus as first name, maybe second? Think I prefer Somerset as first name but have to agree with NN of Somer sounding girly. If it were me I'd go for a strong masculine name like Arthur, Edmund or Orson as first name although good point about getting Orson Cart as NN or Ambrose and custard (even though it's Ambrosia).

Whatever you like you should go for, don't let other's decide it's your baby after all! But do consider what it would be like at school with the bullies and a name like Judas or Ambrose Somerset Smith (ASS). Schools hard enough without giving bullies ammunition!

Good luck x

muminthemiddle · 12/06/2010 00:35

I only really like Edmund. Jude is great as a name, Judas would be tempting fate in my book.
Only ever heard of a cat being called Ambrose, is it actually a name or a brand or custard?
Somerset=very effeminate to me and that alone would rule it out.

seeker · 12/06/2010 00:23

Orson, Somerset and Atlas are SUCH a mistake. And Judas is impossible to disassociate from the betrayal and pieces of silver thing. How about Jude instead?

Edmund Jude.

Hedwig3 · 12/06/2010 00:11

Ambrose is great.

Quite like Otto but I think it gets used a lot for pets in case that would bother you.

Cortina · 10/06/2010 14:03

Ambrose I love, I saw a beautiful little boy in a friend's photograph and this was his name, ever since then I have been drawn to it. Also in a Du Maurier I think and is a West Country (?) name. Think of it as quite a posh name and the sort of boy I would have met on holiday as a girl and had a crush on for years!

DH just laughed and laughed at my suggestion but many of my favourites seem to be surging in popularity so watch this space .

Somerset, Edmund and Arthur I like too. Less keen on Otto and Orson (Orson cart made me LOL)!

pinkmagic1 · 10/06/2010 13:29

I don't really like any of the suggestions, except Atlas. It is a good, strong name imo but like others have said not to everyones tastes and could lead to potential teasing.

swanandduck · 10/06/2010 13:26

They're all awful. Sorry.

migola - I love Blackadder so I'm more than happy to have the association. I did ponder on Jude, but it's a bit trendy nowadays, what with Mr Law (drool).

Orson (As in Welles) - I LOVE it and have never met one before. great name
Otto - is italian for the number 8..
Ambrose - no sorry
Edmund - blackadder
Arthur - don't mind it
Somerset (Probably as a MN) - really like it
Atlas (Greek god, not a map) - er, no

can't you have Jude as a MN instead of Judas?

joymaker · 06/06/2010 15:09

love Orson,Otto and Atlas!

meadowlarks · 06/06/2010 14:52

NanKid - Lol. It was an experiment, I definitely wouldn't actually call a child Judas. I have difficulty seeing how any of them are pretentious, they're all pretty classic names, just not very often used today.

OP posts:
CharlieBoo · 05/06/2010 19:50

I think you're trying too hard. Sometimes different can also be naff. I personally don't like any of them. Judus, Somerset and atlas??? Why why why???? Just my opinion tho, good luck with rest of pregnancy

NanKid · 05/06/2010 18:58

Judas as a middle name. Why? Why? would you do that to a child?

The rest are all pretentious/try hard, with the exception of Ambrose, which is very sweet but says '80 yr old Jamaican man' to me.

mummyosar · 05/06/2010 18:48

Orson - lovely, original, strong sounding name
Otto -NO. Simpsons connotation, doesn't sound like real name
Ambrose - i think of custard
Edmund - good name
Arthur - great name
Somerset (Probably as a MN)- kids will think summer and girly and torment him mercilessly
Atlas (Greek god, not a map) - also big potential for torment, 'where you going Atlas' 'got lost atlas.' No.

Think so few kids know biblical stories that Judas will be fine for middle name. Also, middle names are such low risk anyway.

meadowlarks · 04/06/2010 20:31

Out of the list, I can't decide which I'd want as a first name. I think it's between Arthur and Ambrose at the moment. The thing is, they're both quite fickle names, I picture a man called Ambrose/Arthur either being really lovely and warm or being some smelly old bloke in a jumper. Some times I dream of Somerset as a first but then I wonder how he'd get through life xD And what would be his NN? "Somer" just sounds too feminine.

Orson (As in Welles)-
Knock knock.
Who's there?
Orson.
Orson who?
Orson Cart.
(unhelpful sorry)
Otto- is the Auto guy in the Simpsons.
Ambrose- Is horrid.
Edmund- Lovely
Arthur- Nice, but do remember that our dear PM has one.
Somerset (Probably as a MN)- I like this one, even as a first name.
Atlas (Greek god, not a map)- No, it really is a map.
Nooooooooooooonnononononno to Judas- But what about Josiah?

bigbluebump · 04/06/2010 18:46

Orson and Ambrose are my favourites - I really like them both!

janeite · 04/06/2010 18:43

Edmund is lovely. Don't like any of the others but Atlas is particularly bad imho.

I think Judas is probably too 'loaded' but I do like Jude.

I like Atticus and Tobias but not fond of all of those names you've listed together - unless you are a peer of the realm or something.

Edmund Tobias sounds good or Atticus Edmund.

BubbaAndBump · 04/06/2010 18:38

Ambrose was my cat's name, so a no no for that one. I really like Atticus, like Arthur and Edmund but would steer clear of Somerset even as a middle name as it sounds more like a surname anyway. Like Tobias but there are a lot of them about atm where we live...

What about Aubrey instead of Ambrose?

Is this your first child? (as you don't want to use up all your favourite names in one go if you plan to have more). If not, what are the sibling(s) names?

meadowlarks · 04/06/2010 18:34

Is Arthur trendy? The only person I've met called Arthur was my old History teacher, who must have been about 60.
