Is Lucas destined to be ultra popular?

Do you like it?

I know one Lucas. I like it and I like Luke.

munchkinland · 07/06/2010 16:42

If my next baby (I am 34 weeks) is a boy he will be called Luke - I also like Lucas though and DD1 (5) wants to call a boy Lucas, so he might end up being called both - as she is very stubborn and will probably just call him Lucas whatever his name!!
They are nice not so common/not so faddy names.

atrixo · 07/06/2010 16:04

This is what it says in 'A Concise Dictionary of First Names' Oxford University Press:

Lucas

In part a learned form of Luke, in part a transferred use of the surname derived from it in the Middle Ages.
The Latin form Lucas was often used in the Middle Ages in written documents in place of the spoken vernacular form Luke, hence the common surname. It is also the spelling preferred in the Authorized Version of the New Testament, which has had some influence on its selection as a given name.

I keep hearing it's very popular but I only know 2 Lukas (1 Italian), my Luke & no Lucas'.

henry37 · 05/06/2010 22:07

its become very popular.

SalFresco · 05/06/2010 21:18

I have a Luke, he is the only one is his class and there are no Lucas's or Luka's either. Surprising considering they are officially pretty popular!

lovechoc · 05/06/2010 20:28

I love love love the name Lucas! have one myself - 3yo

so far I haven't come across any in our area, which is nice. although I'm sure a few will crop up at school when DS starts!

I would say it is picking up in popularity though.

Claire236 · 05/06/2010 20:14

I wanted to call ds1 Lucas but dh didn't like it so he's Luke instead. Lovely name.

Mirrorball · 05/06/2010 19:55

It's my little boy's middle name and I adore it. My close friends little boy has a Lucas - he is gorgeous. The meaning is beautiful "Light" which is why we chose it for a middle name.

englishmummyinwales · 05/06/2010 19:52

I think that Lucas will date in the future, not that it's necessarily a problem - I don't see the Alisons and Lisas of my childhood being burdened by that. I have a Lukas and spelt it that way because it's the German translation of Luke and therefore a biblical name, so thought it wouldn't date in the same way. I didn't know, however, that Lucas is also in the bible, so stand corrected on that. Eitherway, I think it's a lovely name (obviously!), but to answer your original question, yes it has become fairly popular (rose to no. 15 on the Bounty list in 2009 I think)

brennannbooth · 05/06/2010 17:27

V good Euro-name IMO, it is pretty popular in France and Germany at the moment

websticks · 05/06/2010 16:21

I have a lucas he is 12 now and when i named him i had never heard of any other lucas,s. However over the years i have heard of a few but still wouldn,t say its popular. I still love the name today and people often comment on how nice it is.

crumpette · 05/06/2010 11:15

Sorry about the mucus comment, I've just had a DS and I so nearly called him Lucas. But I kept thinking Lucas mucus Lucas mucus and it put me off It's not a surname used as a first name, it's a legitimate first name from Latin roots. It's very international which I love, I think it's great really. If I ever had a DS2 it would be on my list, alongside Nicolas despite my comments. Just ignore me!

MamaLazarou · 05/06/2010 10:27

It's very popular round here. I know of three baby Lucases born within a month of each other last year.

Marcus is an excellent name!

chaostrulyreigns · 05/06/2010 10:16

Love the name!

TV influences - Spooks? The lovely Richard Armitage? A fine specimen.

TheArmadillo · 05/06/2010 10:10

I love the name Lucas - I want it if we have a boy but dh undecided.

Didn't realise it had risen in popularity.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 05/06/2010 09:49

Love Lucas.

loobylu3 · 05/06/2010 09:23

Lucas is definitely not a surname used as a first name.
It is a very old name and appears in The Bible. It is from the same root as Luke but is the Roman form.
There are so many first names which are also used as surnames. I have met people with these surnames: George, Allison, Charles, Edward, Hannah...

It has become much more popular over the last 5-10 years and seems to be rising still.

gaelicsheep · 04/06/2010 23:51

I quite like Marcus - hadn't thought of that. I thought Lucas had the same origins as Luke - if it is a surname used as a first name we won't be using it. My slight worry about Lucas is that it might be a bit too close to Lucifer?

MagalyZz · 04/06/2010 23:47

I know a good few. I moved from UK to Ireland and it seems fairly popular in both places. Not like Jack obviously but I know a few.

WHat about Marcus?! Has the same vibe. I have always loved that name and I don't know any and I can't understand why. I would have used it but it sounded awful with second name.

Greythorne · 04/06/2010 23:41

Nah, it sounds weird to me
Have you read Midnight is a place? Strange boy called lucas in that!

atrixo · 04/06/2010 23:40

My Oxford Dictionary of Names says it's a surname used as a first name. I know quite a few people with Lucas as a surname but that doesn't bother me. Most surnames are first names these days anyway.

OP posts:
Wanderingsheep · 04/06/2010 22:53

I've only heard it as a first name apart from George Lucas.

DanJARMouse · 04/06/2010 22:52

Not a fan personally..... reminds me of Lucas from Eastenders and he is a BAD BAD man!

There is a Lucas in DD2's nursery class, and we knew a Luca where we used to live.

Luca is cute in its own way, but again not one I would choose.

Prefer Daniel/James/Matthew type names myself!
