I like both these boy's names.

What do people think? Are either of them more popular than the other?

I like Evan better than Owen. I had Evangeline on my girls shortlist and wanted to shorten that to Evan, but DH didn't agree.

emmyloo2 · 03/06/2010 12:16

Thanks edam and glittery...I have this feeling that's if it's a boy it will be Evan. I am loving it more and more.

DS aged 11 has one of each as a mate!! Both are from welsh families I like both names because both of those boys are fab!!

edam · 03/06/2010 10:55

ooh yes, good choice! ds is Evan so obviously I'm biased but it is a lovely name. He likes being called Ifanbach occasionally too.

glittery · 03/06/2010 10:47

great choice emmy!

edam · 03/06/2010 10:39

You can't blame people for saying 'Dillon' because it's become the normal pronunciation but it is bloody irritating that no-one knows better.

helyg · 03/06/2010 10:37

edam my DH is called Dylan. So many people call him "Dillon" which really annoys him.

emmyloo2 · 03/06/2010 10:17

Thanks everybody. I have kind of decided in my head I prefer Evan....I don't think it is too popular in Australia and to be honest, I have given up worrying whether names are too popular or not because all the ones I like are inevitably popular.

Now I just have to wait 3 weeks to find out the sex and can then lock in the name!

Evan

edam · 02/06/2010 22:38

The one that always niggles me is Dylan because everyone outside Wales pronounces it with a 'i' sound when it should be an 'uh' sound. (I'm only half Welsh but absorbed enough from my Welsh rellies to be irritated by this.)

helyg · 02/06/2010 22:13

Both are very popular here in Wales, but I like them both. DD would have been Evan if she was a boy, and I have a nephew called Owen.

glittery · 02/06/2010 22:07

Jamie The scottish meaning is "right handed" not quite so appealling!

glittery - did not know that!. I will tell DS1 as I think he'll like that (he's been having some probs lately and his self-esteem is a bit rubbish)

glittery · 02/06/2010 21:50

glitteryboy is called Evan and like Jamieandhismagictorch also after Evan Dando!
The Celtic meaning of the name is "young warrior" and as he was born 14 weeks premature and has gone through a lot it seemed appropriate!

LiquoriceLila · 02/06/2010 21:48

I have an Owen whos best friend is an Evan. Obviously I am biased and prefer Owen but Evan is nice too. Evan is getting quite popular in the North West.

edam · 02/06/2010 21:42

Yup, Evan's the Welsh form of John. Evan's the Anglicised spelling, the Welsh is Ifan, pronounced with a long 'ee' sound (eevan - single f is sounded as a V).

bleedingheart · 02/06/2010 20:34

Evan is a lovely name and not too popular (as in frequently heard!)

Jamieandhismagictorch · 02/06/2010 20:23

yy - John - my brother and FIL names, so was triply appropriate

I have an Evan. It is more common in Wales, and also in Australia and the US, I believe. Less common in England.

Got the idea from Evan Dando (the Lemonheads). Ther's also Evan Davies (presenter).

pitterpatterfeet · 02/06/2010 19:40

Owen very popular I think. Don't know of any Evan's though. Maybe popular in Wales?

Jamieandhismagictorch · 02/06/2010 18:21
