Yes I know Ellie's are ten a penny but I like it - what can it be short for?

I like long names with nick names, like Ellie as a nickname.

Tryng to think of long versions and only have:

  • Eleanor
  • Ellinor
  • Eloise

What else is there?

Elenora is nice!

Quite like Elodie but DH doesn't.

Boodle DD has a long name and a nn and we use both of them. I also like the fact that she can use a more formal version of her name at work if she wants to (which is what I do with my name).

I have a stepdaughter Ellesse who we call Ellie and I also have a DD called Ellie....i also have a female cousin called Ellis who gets called Ellie.

personally i like Ellie as a name by itself as don't see the point in having a name for a child that never gets used!

Thanks mummyneedschoc but I'm really not that keen on Ellen, I think that's why I don't like they Elle-an-ah pronunciation.

I think Eleanor is beautiful & nice for your DD to have a longer formal name too.

If you're not keen on that, Ellen can also be shortened to Ellie.

Thanks 5dollar, that's how I like it pronounced.

But then I keep thinking of Eleanor Rigby, which I don't pronounce like that.

I prefer Eleanor to Ellinor but I think the emphasis is definitely on the or with the second spelling.

I would pronounce Eleanor - ell-an-or. I think all the Eleanor's I've known have pronounced it like that.

DH's cousin's little girl is called Ellie in its own right. She is named after her great-grandmother Eleanor, but her parents preferred Ellie and so went with it.

The only other name which springs to mind at the moment is Elodie. Elise is lovely.

Sorry I should say that DD's middle name is Elizabeth so that and iterations of it are out!

Can I ask, do you pronounce Eleanor:

Elle-an-ah or Ell-an-or?

I think I prefer it with an or sound at the end but don't think it's actually pronounced like that.
