Halcyon and Octavia for my twin girls

newtwinmummy · 31/05/2010 13:43

I'm expecting non identical girl twins in September.

What do you think of the names Halcyon and Octavia? I know they are rare names and not everyone will like them.

Any ideas for middle names? I have to include Joan as a family name or something like this.

I like Octavia, I know of 1 who is the 8th child and she's known as Tave, which in my opinion is pretty.
Not sure about Halcyon though, definitely a bit different.
Good luck!

Weird. No wonder she was so upset if the dc already have those names.

scottishmummy · 02/06/2010 21:08

as in inigo jones architect?yes like it

janeite · 02/06/2010 19:10

Weird - but I do like Inigo a lot.

LuluF · 02/06/2010 15:07

Can you be sure it's the same person and not someone who has read it and posted on here afterwards?

so she's already saddled all 4 children with dreadful (imho) names and is now asking what everyone thinks? Don't get it. God mn has been weird today

LiquoriceLila · 01/06/2010 21:42

Im sorry but I dont like either name... in fact I think they are both awful.

catinthehat2 · 01/06/2010 21:36

Oh dear.

AS I thought, there seems to be more to this naming thing

Do you want to tell us what this is all about OP?

scottishmummy · 01/06/2010 21:27

names are deeply subjective.quirky/unique to one is naff to another.ask on open forum and you will get comments,in rl likely no one would say outright.more likely to say how do you spell that, thats unusual etc

but tbh i wouldn't and didnt ask opinions on baby manes.people can like or lump as far as i am concerned

but seek opinions on baby name thread and you will get them

maktaitai · 01/06/2010 21:19

I love both names but would never have the courage to use them. Joan I also like but IMO it does have a very different feel.

My personal feeling is that if you go for a more unusual first name, give a much less standout second name; better still, go the other way round.

Louisa Halcyon
Joan Octavia

are names I would admire without reservation. Only my opinion.

scottishmummy · 01/06/2010 21:10

opinions about names on names thread.well i never.who'd have thunk it

TotallyWipedout · 01/06/2010 21:08

Scottishmummy, I think you are begging all sorts of questions there...

scottishmummy · 01/06/2010 20:49

yes maybe there is reason one is popular and other isnt...

TotallyWipedout · 01/06/2010 18:24

Olivia is only the most used name on the planet... unlike Octavia, methinks...

winkle2 · 01/06/2010 15:57

I dont like either name to be honest.

Never heard of Halcyon and Octavia is extremely posh.

If you like Halcyon why not have Halle - like Halle Berry? Halle Joan could work too?

If you like 'O' names what about Olivia Joan or Ophelia Joan?

GillyBoot · 01/06/2010 01:05

Aren't both twins named after the boat, Hallie and Annie?

jabberwocky · 01/06/2010 00:50

Well, I can see it for a boat...

I don't get this gripe that the OP/child must have an affiliation to the number eight to be able to use Octavia. Millions of people call their son Thomas - we don't bang on about him needing to be a twin, do we?!
Anyway, they are due in September - being twins, high possibility of being early and thus born in the eighth month, August.

Ooh, OP, what about Octavia and Augusta!

As for words that are used as names, there are PLENTY of names that double up as words, but they are still used:

Mark (dirty stain/mark my words), John (toilet), Lou (loo - toilet), Will (left behind by dead relative/will he won't he), Bill (dollar bill), Cliff (rock exposure), Kurt (curt - precise), Peter (to peter out), Dick (ahem), Matt (small carpet), Jack (lever up a car), Abi (abbey - monastery), Gail (gale - wind), Sue (take to court), Dawn (morning), Di (die - expire), Neil (kneel - get down on knees), Rob (steal), Toby (mug), Jim (gym - exercise place), Barney (argue), Carol (Christmas song), Grace (prayer said before a meal), Scott (get off scott-free), Dom (dominatrix). Etc etc!

I prefer the names OP has come up with to many of the other ones I see here.

MNHubbie · 31/05/2010 23:40

I was being polite not vague. I have been very clear and will not pander to your ego any further as you are clearly attention seeking.

scottishmummy · 31/05/2010 23:07

your hints/inferences are too vague what are you on about man?

MNHubbie · 31/05/2010 23:03

No it is normal for folks to fail to read what others have posted and the same themes to come up. When the same person keeps on posting the same thing that is more akin to bullying.

Also when someone makes a general point about politeness without naming any names and is responded to with insults and sarcasm it really doesn't show the respondent in the best light.
