Sophie or Sophia?

After months of disagreeing on names and with less than 2 weeks to go, DH and I have finally come down to Sophie or Sophia. I realize that one letter really shouldn't make that much difference but one of us really wants one and one the other! Please help us decide.

Also, middle names - we have Erin and Elisa/Eliza, which do you think goes best with which first name?

Sophie is simple like Alice.

Sophia is like Alicia. Then you get the dodgy versions like Sophier/saphire (like Allysia et al)

Just seen your middle names. I agree about having one name ending in a.

I prefer Eliza to Erin as well, so Sophie Eliza is lovely.

I prefer Sophie. But actually, if you're concerned about Sophie's popularity what about Sadie, Susie or Sylvie?

Sophia is nice, but I just think Sophie is simpler, and better for that. Never sur whether to say Sew fee a or soff ee ya, or even soffya

Sophia is a bit current (slightly celeby feel) and sounds weak. Sophie much stronger and much classier IMO.

I opted for Sophie and I don't think its common. There are two is my dd's school of 300 children. Although I like Sophia too.

I always thought of Sophie as being the short form of Sophia, for people who couldn't be bothered to say the whole name.

Doubtless not the case, that's just how it feels to me. Sophie just sounds like a nn.

Sophie is more classic. Pretty in a natural way.
Unless you are Greek in which case you probably see it the other way round.

I too have a Sophie Emily......a v beautiful name IMO. I liked Sophia too, but DH said it sounded too "up itself".

I think Sophie is v common popular, Sophia less so, though I think it is gaining in popularity. I don't think it will become ubiquitous like Evie/Isabella/whatever.

I like lots of names which sound similar to Sophia

Saffron
Safrane
Zaphia
Seraphina
Can't think of any more but there are loads

i too am deliberating Sophia but am unsure as to whether or not to spell it Sophia/Sofia or go for slightly different name and have Saffia.....

so really i am no help at all to you other than to say definitely not Sophie....

Sorry to hijack but is it quite a popular name? Doesn't really bother me as DD's name is in the top ten and the other name we're considering is Isabella which everyone on here is always slagging off for being popular.

But I just wondered.

With - a surprising amount of people call me dd so-fye-a, as opposed to so-fee-a, which is how I pronounce it.

It doesn't really matter. It does piss me off when people call her Sophie, though (yes, i am looking at you MIL, dd is 14 so you have had enough time to fathom out there is an a on the end of her name )

Am seriously considering this for DD2 due in 5 weeks.

Can I just ask if there is a variation in how people pronounce it? Cos that's the only thing that puts me off.

I would pronounce it soh-fee-ya but have heard it said suh-fi-yah.

Sophie has more of a vintage feel whereas Sophia feels more modern.

Sophia is far nicer than Sophie, which is a meh name (mother of a Sophia).

It is more classic i think. And euphonically prettier (imho of course).

I wouldn't have a name ending in a leading into another name beginning with a vowel, it sounds disjointed.
