There is a girl in my class called Anya and I like it. It means 'Grace'

ProfYaffle · 03/06/2010 08:06

I know someone called Anya, I like it but it does make me think of potatoes.

iMum · 03/06/2010 07:57

Canya anya?

Rindercella · 03/06/2010 07:56

Love it. Anya is the phonetic spelling of the Irish Aine.

DD2's middle name is Anya.

zozzle · 28/05/2010 17:07

Lovely

Um, Russians would pronounce it Aanya, unless it's spelt with an O in the cyrillic alphabet. And I love it. Bit different to Anna, which I also love.

SambuccaKelly · 28/05/2010 12:56

Very pretty.

pitterpatterfeet · 28/05/2010 11:10

TinyApeInBigPants · 28/05/2010 08:33

shoshe · 28/05/2010 08:29

I went to school with an Anya, she went on to be the Russian Guard in Elton Johns Nikita.

skihorse · 28/05/2010 08:16

SirBoobAlot · 27/05/2010 21:15

I absolutely adore it.

mintyfresh · 27/05/2010 20:14

My DD is Anya - potatoes have never come up in conversation (although they get thrown a lot at the dinner table!!).

MagalyZz · 27/05/2010 16:44

Potatoes??? Julienne is potatoes!!

MagalyZz · 27/05/2010 16:43

JimmyTarbuck, have you heard how they pronounce Ana on desperate housewives (if you watch it!) they all say Onna. Really odd.

MagalyZz · 27/05/2010 16:42

I really like it. It's a pet form isn't it? the way we might shorten any name starting with Anne or Anna to Annie, the russians might shorten it to Anya.

It's lovely.

ShinyAndNew · 27/05/2010 14:58

AppleTreeWick, Anja is a proper way of spelling it, as a shortening of Anjanka.

I am not sure where the name originated from, but I wanted dd2 to be named after someone from my Gran's side of the family, who all come from Slovenia.

helyg · 27/05/2010 14:25

My friend's eldest is called Anya and I think its lovely.

Rubena · 27/05/2010 14:21

like it

FourLittleDucks · 27/05/2010 12:59

Our DD4 was nearly Anya, sometimes I call her it - but husband vetoed it, and to be honest after 3D's with slightly unusual names it was a bit of a relief to go for something that didn't need explaining ! So we have Anna instead, which is also beautiful !
But go for it - I like it because it is elegant and yet character-ful

AppleTreeWick · 27/05/2010 12:32

Someone in my family is called Anya too and I love the name.

People can't spell it though bless em..Annie, Anja etc etc

Tis Russian/Polish also Anjelica (I think)
