I don't know whether it's a boy/girl. I like relatively unusual names and would prefer not to choose something that's particularly in vogue at the moment. My surname is Dixon. Let me know if you think any are ghastly! Also, any other similar name suggestions/middle name ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Barnaby
Arthur
Oscar
Milo
Sebastian
Monty

Jemima
Aurora
Isla
Amelie
Adele
Allegra

I prefer Aurora but they are both lovely names.

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 20/05/2010 12:56

I prefer Aurelia (love the name Aurelia). Aurora is a bit Disney-Princessy for me.

EleanorD · 20/05/2010 12:17

Do people think Aurora is nicer than Aurelia? I like both of them and can't decide which I prefer. Thank you!

Barnaby, Arthur and prefer Adela - under used and pretty.

George2010 · 20/05/2010 11:05

Oh and Adele is lovely and a very under used name considering it's so nice!

George2010 · 20/05/2010 11:03

Milo and Isla are my favs, love them.

we had Isla on our list but to be honest I decided against it as it's becoming really popular at the mo (it hurt-but had to be done!) I had Amelie too though I know you've knocked that one now...

Love Aurora -I think it'll always be unusual and it's just beautiful.

Really don't like Barnaby sorry! We had a boy at school called that and he was constantly teased which was a shame as he was a lovely lad!

Milo Dixon, how cool is that!

sapell3 · 20/05/2010 00:27

I like Milo and Sebastian, Aurora and Adele.

Margaret3 · 19/05/2010 13:34

Monty
Arthur
Barnaby
Milo
Oscar
Sebastian

Aurora
Jemima
Amelie
Isla
Allegra
Adele

EleanorD · 19/05/2010 13:32

Thanks everybody - that's v.useful. I was having concerns about Sebastian with my surname so it's interesting that other people picked up on that! People seem to universally agree on Isla and Amelie being v.popular so will stay away from them. Also good to know there are loads of Oscars - my husband will be pleased that one is off the list! V.mixed reactions to Aurora so will mull on that one.

Hope you don't mind my saying, but your list is quite fashionable imo- nowt wrong with that, but you do say you want something unusual.

Barnaby- that very annoying bear off cbeebies, and the inspector off Midsomer Murders. ( at too much tv).
Arthur- I like it but doesn't David Cameron have one? I know a few under 5.
Oscar- Loads of them
Milo- Tweenies.
Sebastian- not keen
Monty - quite nice.

Jemima- puddleduck.
Aurora- too posh, like something hyacinth bucket would call her daughter.
Isla- looooads of these
Amelie- pretty
Adele - nice
Allegra is the name of a car.

I wanted something a bit unusual for my DS2, having given DS1 a name which was unusual but surged in popularity around the time of his birth. So DS2 has a name which might have been trendy 40 years ago (think Stephen, Phillip, Paul type thing). I haven't heard of a single child with his name.

Eglu · 19/05/2010 11:21

Barnaby - lovely
Arthur - bit popular maybe
Oscar - too popular
Milo - lovely
Sebastian - lovely
Monty - not keen

Jemima - adore
Aurora - adore
Isla - popular
Amelie - maybe quite popular, certainly lots of Amelias
Adele - not keen
Allegra - harsh sounding

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 19/05/2010 11:17

I don't hate any of them

In terms of absolute current popularity, they are

Milo not in top 100
Barnaby not in top 100
Oscar #23
Sebastian #80
Arthur not in top 100
Monty not in top 100

Isla #28
Amelie #78
Aurora not in top 100
Jemima not in top 100
Allegra not in top 100
Adele not in top 100

I like the name Sebastian but I don't think Sebastian Dixon flows brilliantly with the double -n endings.

If you don't want popular, I would go with Adele for a girl. It's more unexpected than the others.

For a boy I like Milo if you can get past the Tweenies thing, which I never could, or Miles if you'd consider that. If not then probably Arthur.

Horton · 19/05/2010 10:56

Miles is nice. I like that a lot.

ILoveGregoryHouse · 19/05/2010 10:44

I like Sebastian but not sure if it's a mouthful with your surname too.

I like Miles rather than Milo. And Jemima.

Aurora is a bit bleh and Amelie is just blaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh.

DuelingFanjo · 19/05/2010 10:34

Milo
Barnaby
Oscar
Sebastian
Arthur
Monty

Isla
Amelie
Aurora
Jemima
Allegra
Adele

I only like Milo and Isla. I think the others are, well.... just not what I would choose.

HubbaBubbaAbba · 19/05/2010 10:30
  1. Sebastian
  2. Arthur
  3. Oscar
  4. Monty
  5. Milo
  6. Barnaby
  1. Amelie
  2. Adele
  3. Isla
  4. Jemima
  5. Aurora
  6. Allegra
LleytonsMummy · 18/05/2010 20:43

Aurora was the girls name I had , if My 2 ds had been. So def my vote for that

I really like Sebastian for a boy I think its a lovely name

hth

Lucypeanut · 18/05/2010 20:35

Barnaby - love it, friend's name but we shorten it to Barny
Arthur - Pauline Fowler? Arthuuur!
Milo - my favourite chocolate drink from Australia that I am addicted to now I'm pregnant!
Sebastian - Love it, have an Italian friend called Sebastiano and we shorten it to Seba.
Monty - Don the gardener

Jemima - also puddleduck, Jemima Khan who never smiles
Aurora - sleeping beauty used to be favourite disney movie and her real name was Aurora, love it
Isla - name of my sister's dog but I do love the name (had to cross it off my list thanks to sis, not that she knew!)
Adele - Da Silva, horrible slutty one from Emmerdale
Allegra - lovely

ASmallBunchOfFlowers · 18/05/2010 20:23

The only names from your lists which I like are Arthur and Allegra - the others are too commonplace now.

But I agree with Horton - if you are really aiming for radical chic then you need to pick names like (the two I always suggest) Peter and Jane.

Horton · 18/05/2010 20:17

If you want something really really unusual, go for Susan or Robert.

dannas · 18/05/2010 20:10

These are all VERY fashionable. I suggest you scrap them and start again if you want names that aren't in vogue.

Edward
James
William
Andrew

Elizabeth
Katherine
Anna
Helena

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 18/05/2010 20:04

Aurora and Milo are pretty nice names.

pointydog · 18/05/2010 20:02

I like Isla and Adele.

That's it.

janeite · 18/05/2010 19:50

Barnaby or Sebastian for a boy, then Monty. I don't like Arthur or Milo.

Adele is lovely for a girl - not fond of the others.

EleanorD · 18/05/2010 19:46

Thanks - that's v.useful. Def ruled out Amelie and Oscar (husband would never put up with Oscar anyhow!). In response to an earlier post - no, I've not been posting other threads under different names!
