Short list of names - please vote!

Hello,

I am pregnant with my first baby. We don't know the sex yet so I have short lists for boys and girls. I know some of these names are very popular in the UK but I am Australian so they are less popular here. I am basically looking for a nice classic name which is not overused.

Ok, here goes...

Boys: Theodore (Theo), Maxim (Max), Thomas, Isaac

Girls: Rose, Eve, Elizabeth, Josephine (Josie), Juliet (??not sure about this)

We wanted Luka for a boy because it's my husband's grandfather's name (he is Serbian) but his sister named her son it and while she wouldn't care if we also used it, I want something new.

Any other suggestions also welcome!!

Oh yeah - middle name for a girl will definitely be Amy after my sister. Boy - maybe Edward after my father but maybe no middle name at all (it is not typical in Serbian culture to have middle names).

OK, cast your votes!! Thanks!

Well for a boy it would have to be Isaac maybe Zak for short - but I am bias as this is my son's name.

I like both Rose and Eve for a girl, have you thought about Elsie for a girl, it's quite old fashioned but it is making a come back in England. - But actually with Amy for a middle name I think maybe the longer names and then shorten them - but then I am a bit undecisive when it comes to girls names.

boogeek · 18/05/2010 10:01

I can't name boys, but I love Juliet for a girl

BoldChislersMummy · 18/05/2010 10:03

Juliet for a girl, but I also like Eve and Elizabeth.
Boys names are all fine. Teddy

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 18/05/2010 10:08

Isaac and Elizabeth

hatwoman · 18/05/2010 10:13

like them all except for Eve. and not so keen on Maxim - but I do like Max.

If I had to chose one of each it would be Max and Juliet

mamasunshine · 18/05/2010 10:18

Thomas Edward sounds great!

Elizabeth and Juliet are lovely!

MaryBS · 18/05/2010 10:25

I like Isaac or Thomas for a boy, Juliet for a girl, although I like all the girls names you mentioned. Charlotte also goes well with Amy.

Can you anglicise Luka, maybe Luke or Luc?

MunchkinsMumof2 · 18/05/2010 11:07

Theo and Rose

loobylu3 · 18/05/2010 11:16

Theodore Edward or Thomas Edward for a boy. All good classics although Thomas is v popular here in the UK.

Juliet Amy or Josephine Amy sound good.
I love Eve and Rose as first names (more than Josephine) but I don't think they flow well with Amy.

emmyloo2 · 18/05/2010 11:22

Thanks everyone. Looks like mixed responses.

I love Teddy but I think Theodore would get shortened to Theo. I would actually love to go with Edward as a first name but I think my husband would say it's too stuffy.

My favourites at the moment are probably Theodore (which I think is still very uncommon in Australia) and maybe Elizabeth...

God, it's bloody hard to decide.

I wanted Henrietta on the girl's list but not sure that would get past the husband...

Oh I love Henrietta

LaDiDaDi · 18/05/2010 13:05

I like Theodore if you are not using Edward as a middle name but I think that Isaac or Thomas work better with Edward and are lovely names.

I like Elizabeth and Juliet for girls, be careful about using names that end in a vowel nest to one's that start in a vowel, eg Eve Amy, as the two names tend to run into each other

flockwallpaper · 18/05/2010 13:07

I like Theo and Elizabeth. I think they will go well with your middle name choices too.

swanandduck · 18/05/2010 13:10

I like all your girl's names except Josephine.
Thomas and Max for a boy.

CuppaTeaJanice · 18/05/2010 13:11

Maxim and Elizabeth (Effie) get my votes.

missseptember · 18/05/2010 13:19

Thomas and Rose. If i had a boy he was going to be Thomas, and my dds middle name is Rose.

Francagoestohollywood · 18/05/2010 13:22

I like Isaac, Thomas. Juliet and Josephine.

emmyloo2 · 18/05/2010 13:22

Thanks for the responses! I never thought Elizabeth would be a list on my name, but I just think it is one of those classic, pretty names which is not overly popular and never dates. Plus I love Lizzie for a little girl.

Boys are a bit harder. I love Thomas but my husband's mate has a Thomas and I would like to go with something no one else has chosen. I think it will come down to Theo, Isaac or Maxim. I think Maxim is slightly Serbian in origin as well (???) so slight cultural element there...

Josephine and Thomas - but I'm biased, as this is my name and my husband's name...we also love Theodore as a possible name for our first baby

For what it's worth, I loved my name growing up and I loved that there weren't many other Josephines around x

emmyloo2 · 18/05/2010 15:54

Josephine is a lovely name. And I think Josie shortened is also lovely. It is quite old fashioned but sweet.

My husband has agreed to consider Edward so I have added that to my list and given it is my father's and grandfather's name I think it would be a nice tradition. I love Teddy and Ed and Eddie as well.

Decisions, decisions....

Your boy's names are all very popular in the UK, although all nice names.

Girls: Rose, Eve, Elizabeth, Josephine (Josie), Juliet (??not sure about this)

Your girls names are very pretty. Eve is incredibly popular here, too (Evie/Eve/Eva have all been in the Top 10 for several years, I think).

Love Juliet.

EleanorD · 18/05/2010 16:33

Like Theo and Max lots. Faves out of the girls are Juliet and Rose.
