I can't help but think of Audrey as an old woman's name. But so was Grace until v recently.

With Audrey I always think of a mad old bat I once worked with who smelt of cabbage.

Nooooo I can't like it

Aitch · 18/05/2010 17:09

there is no need to start a thread such as these ones, no need at all. how much fun do you think it is for the many, many, many people whose children have these names to read (because i think we have established that over-rated really means popular). it's just a bit naff and nasty, imo, and i will genuinely never understand why people post these OPs, knowing that all they can do is sting people who see their children's names on here.

i think the same of the chav names threads as well, i just don't get the desire to send a message to parents that they've given their kids a name that others don't think much of.

or 'Roberts'. To be honest, I don't think of either of them I just think of a 1950s schoolgirl in a boarding school book.

I also can't understand why 'Audrey' is becoming so popular (well on Mumsnet anyway). I just don't get it.

WhatsAllThisThen · 18/05/2010 16:51

I like Finlay. We thought about Finlay for a DS.

dannas · 18/05/2010 16:51

I love the name Finlay FioFio. It's quite popular but not common.

lovechoc · 18/05/2010 16:50

Jack and Sophie

Actually I was really hoping to piss you off. That's why I leave the house occasionally so you wonder where I've gone. I laugh all the way down the road.

OP posts:
swanandduck · 18/05/2010 16:46

Aitch

The OP did not ask anyone to 'slag off' names, she just asked people what name they think is overrated. Nobody is forced to read the thread, it's just a bit of fun.
And I also found your post somewhat aggressive.

Aitch · 18/05/2010 16:45

so by over-rated do you actually mean overly-popular?

Aitch · 18/05/2010 16:45

good. so, what names do you think are over-rated and what prompted you to post this question?

WhatsAllThisThen · 18/05/2010 16:45

There was no particular name that prompted me to post the thread. More that you do seem to get the same names over and over around here.

OP posts:
WhatsAllThisThen · 18/05/2010 16:43

Glad you're not feeling aggressive.

i'm not being aggressive in the slightest, but thank you for the passive-aggressive smiley. here's one back.

so, what prompted you to post the thread today? what names do you think are over-rated, and why do you care either way?

WhatsAllThisThen · 18/05/2010 16:34

As I have said twice already, there is no particular point to this thread. As it is making you feel so aggressive, perhaps you would be happier elsewhere.

OP posts:
Aitch · 18/05/2010 16:31

no, actually, that's quite different. that's someone soliciting opinion on the name sophie, not someone asking a forum to slag off particular names. i'm surprised that you can't see the problem, but clearly you can't.

what is the point of this OP? what will the OP gain from finding out that Olivia is, in the opinion of most respondents, an 'over-rated' name?

and in your opinion they're not over-rated, OP, but go on, tell us and we can give you our opinion. it really does seem only fair.

WhatsAllThisThen · 18/05/2010 16:28

I love Violet! It's so...vivid. Or something.

OP posts:
mathanxiety · 18/05/2010 16:26

Verity and Violet.

WhatsAllThisThen · 18/05/2010 16:23

Haha

I love the sniffy 'I notice the OP leaves the house occasionally and is not on this thread 24 hours a day. More than a little suspicious if you ask me'

I don't need to tell you my DC's names as in my opinion they are not over-rated. You'll have to start your own thread.

OP posts:
swanandduck · 18/05/2010 14:30

Surely most mumsnetters realise that whatever name they choose for their children will be considered chavvy/dated/boring/ by some members of the population. Anonymous people on a forum saying 'actually I think the name James/Milly is overrated' is hardly going to send them off in tears because not everyone thinks it's a beautiful, gorgeous, fabulous name.
When people post on here and ask 'what do people think of the name Sophie' and people post back saying 'mmm, not mad about it, prefer Sophia' does that mean anyone with a dd called Sophie has now been insulted and the thread shouldn't have been started?
