Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

isabella. i might start a permanent tally on fb listing how many people i know have named their child isabella. right now its the no.1 name choice if you have some kind of city of london job.

katiepotatie · 19/05/2010 11:11

My two Dc's are in here

zazen · 19/05/2010 11:10

I hear a lot of Ella Isabell/a Ava Jack and Oscar round my way, but they're all fine IMO.
It will identify a generation I think.

withorwithoutyou · 19/05/2010 11:09

Result! My DD's name has been mentioned, as has the name we're considering for DD2.

I don't consider it offensive, it's a bloody good thing considering this section is full of people swooning over names like Jessamy and Beatrix

WhatsAllThisThen · 19/05/2010 11:05

Thank you for that Aitch, you've certainly made your point.

Oh for crying out loud. There's a thread at the moment asking people to rate a list of children's names. My daughter's name is consistently coming bottom. I'm not posting on there asking people to please stop contributing because it's hurting my feelings. I'm just shrugging it off. There are far more hurtful things going on in the world. A group of random strangers not particularly liking your child's name is a very minor thing. If some people are that sensitive then they should just avoid this area of mumsnet. It's called 'baby names' so guess what? Children's names will be discussed.

Aitch · 19/05/2010 10:58

but that is your opinion, in my opinion anyone starting these threads knows that they might very well hurt people's feelings about one of the most personal decisions you can ever make, ie giving a name to your child, but they basically doesn't give a shit because it wouldn't hurt theirs. i think that's naff and nasty - you don't, that's marvellous.

however, i certainly don't think the 'hide' button was intended to create a free-for-all on hurtful posts, otherwise you can justify absolutely anything (as has been tried recently).

like i say, you don't think these threads should hurt people's feelings, so you think that's okay. i'm telling you that they do hurt people's feelings (as some on here have acknowledged), so imo they're not okay. it's a difference of opinion. i will never understand the impetus for organising a thread where people's children's names are slagged off or undermined, be it for being over-rated, chavvy, try-hard or whatever... i just don't get it. you think it's fun, though, so carry on having fun...

WhatsAllThisThen · 19/05/2010 10:38

Thank you swanandduck. This thread really did just came about because I was idly musing on how you hear the same names over and over. I have no sinister motives!

I can understand that some people may not appreciate being told others dislike the names they have chosen, but if that is the case I would expect them not to open the thread.

Can I also point out that for a name to be over-rated it is presumably popular - so one voice of dissent shouldn't be too heartbreaking!

swanandduck · 19/05/2010 10:17

Thank you IvyKaty. I was beginning to think I was odd. I just love that name.

swanandduck · 19/05/2010 10:16

there is no need to start a thread such as these ones, no need at all. how much fun do you think it is for the many, many, many people whose children have these names to read (because i think we have established that over-rated really means popular). it's just a bit naff and nasty, imo, and i will genuinely never understand why people post these OPs, knowing that all they can do is sting people who see their children's names on here.

i think the same of the chav names threads as well, i just don't get the desire to send a message to parents that they've given their kids a name that others don't think much of.

My point though, Aitch, is that if you don't enjoy these threads just don't read them. I see lots of thread titles that I know won't interest me or I won't like and I just don't open them. The title of this thread made the subject quite clear, so why not just stay away from it. My son's name has often got a negative mention on mumsnet. It doesn't bother me. Not everyone has the same taste, so what?

I'll take pouncy any day over a pet name!

We're lucky we have an unusual name in the family which we have passed on, it's fair enough when it's coming down the family line. That shaped ds's name which had to also be Latin to match.

See, once I mention Latin you'll reckon they are pouncy names! But I love that ds has a name that is 2 thousand yrs old or more!

Wanderingsheep · 18/05/2010 20:46

I agree imarried. I suppose not everyone is going to like the name you choose are they, which is good that everyone has their own opinion but DD's name has been mentioned a lot recently and it's starting to wind me up!

I suppose over-rated means people think they are so great that it seems there is a handful of names only to choose from, when there are lots.

It's almost like people are afraid to be different.

LynetteScavo they are great names! For two cats! Actually, your nickname is great.

Wanderingsheep · 18/05/2010 19:55

I actually feel quite sad that my DD's name is mentioned often on MN.

When we named her there was no one that I knew with her name (there still isn't) but it has become quite popular in Britain. I still do think that it is a beautiful name and I'm glad that we chose it. However, I do now wonder that when I tell people her name they are thinking, "not another."

In fact it's only MN that has brought it home to me how common the name actually is. I have never met another.

According to MN my name is "chavvy" as it begins with a K.

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 18/05/2010 19:26

I gave my DD a name I liked (and DH gave in ) and didn't really care what anybody else thought tbh. No point me naming my child a name I didn't like, I'm going to be the one yelling it down the street and in the supermarket.
DD's name can be shortened, and for a while we assumed that she would always be the shortened name. She hates the shortened version, and gets really offended. "Don't call me Evie, my name is Evelyn." (she'll be five in Oct).
She doesn't like her middle name. She wants her middle name to be Louise like mine. She thinks her middle name is a boys name, and now calls herself Evelyn Louise.

LynetteScavo · 18/05/2010 18:55

lovechoc, you are wrong. My cats are called Jack and Sophie, and they are both very fine names!

LynetteScavo · 18/05/2010 18:54

All 3 of my DC have been mentioned!

LuluF · 18/05/2010 18:24

I'm not sure that 'over-rated' does mean 'popular' though, does it? Someone posted that my DD's name 'Nancy' was over-rated, or rather, that they didn't get it. That's not the same as saying it's popular. Because it isn't. Or isn't where we live.

Surely it just means - what names don't you like?

Pointless thread or not, we're all reading it, checking to see if the names we've picked are on here - or at least, that's what I'm doing.

BoldChislersMummy · 18/05/2010 18:13

not that inextricably because i thought you were going to say Wilde!

WhatsAllThisThen · 18/05/2010 18:10

I quite like the name Oscar but it is so inextricably linked with the Grouch!

OP posts:
seashore · 18/05/2010 18:09

Also Oscar.

Maybe these threads are natures way of trying to cull names that have just got way out of control.

And that could be a good thing.
