I don't think any names are really over rated.
I think whether you like a name or mot depends on the first people you ever knew with that particular name. For me I had an elderly relative called Jack, I have no idea whether he was actually called Jack or christened John but he was always known as Jack. He was very nice, very wealthy and very posh. So for me the name Jack has very positive connotations. His wife was from a very well-to do family and always made a big fuss of me as a child.
Likewise the name Olivia was always a favourite of mine ever since the film Grease came out. I always associate the name with Olivia Newton-John and as I thought she was the bees-knees I love that name too.

ingridfletcher i also have a gabriel who gets mistaken for a girl , blonde curls blue eyes etc thats why it suits but not what you mean about calling him something really macho

ImGonnaCountToThree · 22/05/2010 18:45

As with all threads - if you don't like, don't read.

I'm considering what to call my baby, due Jan '11 - this is a REALLY HELPFUL thread - Many thanks to WATT!

oliviasmama · 22/05/2010 08:24

I think Olivia is just lurvelyyyy.....

Bicnod · 22/05/2010 07:41

I think any name can become fab if you know a lovely kid with that name. Some of my friends/family have chosen names for their DC that I quietly raised an eyebrow to myself about. Once you've got to know (and love) the wee one the name becomes synonymous with that child and you can't help but love it.

IME anyway.

ThisIsJustTheStart · 22/05/2010 06:58

Lucia is lovely! Like Lucy even more.

seashore · 21/05/2010 23:43

Lucia is a lovely name. And whatever about on a thread Gunter I think your friends are a bit rude for saying so, although maybe they know you to be thick skinned.

saslou · 21/05/2010 11:59

In defence of this thread, if you were pg and browsing these threads and a name you had in mind was mentioned repeatedly as being very popular or chavvy, you may well reconsider. You wouldn't HAVE to, because you should choose what you like, but I wish someone had told my mum when she was pg in the 70s that my name was waaay overused, because although I like it, it was so common in school that I stopped hearing it as pretty and just thought of it as boring and felt like one of many.

5DollarShake · 21/05/2010 11:01

Well said, Gunther. I think some people just like to be offended, and should have more courage in their convictions!

GuntherMcKilocodie · 21/05/2010 10:15

I really don't understand why people are so fragile and precious about the names that they themselves have chosen for their DC's. Is it a lack of self esteem?
I'm sure that a lot of people don't like the names I've chosen for my DDs. I seriously don't give a fuck. In fact a couple of my friends have said that they don't like the name Lucia (my DD2's name). So what? I don't like fish, I'm damn sure that people who do like it, don't take offence when I refuse to eat it. It's personal taste FFS!

oldandgreynow · 20/05/2010 21:36

I won't name names because I don't want to upset anyone, but I don't like unusual names chosen by middle class parents to show how original and intelligent and posh they are, but unfortunately shout 'pretentious' at everyone else!

Lora69 · 20/05/2010 18:38

SwanandDuck- well said (page 6) This was getting ridicuous.

STIGZ · 20/05/2010 17:53

the name damien makes me think of the omen ! lol , its quite popular in glasgow just now .

CheerfulYank · 20/05/2010 17:12

Most Megans I know are lurvely, fantastic people. Or maybe just me... I love my name!

There are a lot of Megans in the US around my age (28) but not too many littl'uns.

MegSophandEmma · 20/05/2010 16:03

Ahh overrated is the wrong word. I mean highly used.

MegSophandEmma · 20/05/2010 16:02

Sophie and Emma have been mentioned a few times.

I think Megan is more overrated than these two and know only one other Sophie around these parts. No Emma's apart from my own. Megans' are everywhere! they're taking over I tell you ;)Still like the name though.

CheerfulYank · 20/05/2010 15:55

Quite like Albus actually...but not Albus Severus. Ghastly!

laughinglil · 20/05/2010 13:56

Grace or Gracie .. boring!

WhatsAllThisThen · 20/05/2010 09:21

Imarriedafrog no, not like Simba, I would think that is another pet name.

Our names are just proper names, that's all. Nothing wrong with that!

But it does mystify me when something as big as Harry Potter comes along and everyone gets sucked in and actually uses the names from it. Is it really that hard to just decide to think of something else?

dizzydixies · 19/05/2010 20:28

we're the same froggie, am fed up telling people that you might be triping over Isabella's down in the south but DD1 is the only one we know of and she was named after my beloved great aunt
