DS has same name as cat, should we change it?

Hi all, a little bit of advice is needed. We registered the birth of our beautiful son yesterday after 6 weeks of deliberation. We decided to give a name we both absolutely love but which also happens to be the same name as our cat.

Whilst I still love the name, as soon as we got home yesterday, I started to have major doubts purely and simply becuse of the cat. We had thought it wouldn't be a problem but it just seems very odd calling our son then calling the cat by the same name. I hadn't really anticipated exactly how it would be in practice and I guess I now feel our son deserves his own name that hasn't already belonged to a cat!

So, less than 24 hours later, we're considering amending the birth certificate. This would be sad as you can't just change the whole thing but the original name stays and you just add the new name at the bottom. I feel as if the poor boy has only just got his certificate and it's already ruined!

We've talked about changing the cat's name but I think I would still feel DS's name would be the cats as the cat has had that name for years!

A ridiculous situation I know but if anyone has any advice or opinion it would be much appreciated. Thanks

My cat is called James.
My Dads middle name is also James.
I have this battle with OH at the mo, as I would like James as a middle name for future.
He point blank refuses as it's the cats name.

I will win.

I knew it would be Jasper. We wanted it if we had a boy but everyone kept saying "oooh I know a cat called Jasper." To which I usually replied: "So what?" Had a girl in the end.

Cat is Jazzy.
Son is Jasper.

Definitely re-name the cat.

We just named our puppy Tia-Belle as if I had had another DD that's what she would have been called. If DH's vasectomy ever fails I guess she dog will be TB

Hmmmmmmmmmm

I thought this was a dead dog?

Our cats name is Marmite but is known as Mogs. BIL's cat is Maggie, known as Mogs, guess what I'm saying is keep your Ds' name and call the cat Mogs!

Jasper is a gorgeous name and you obviously love it or you wouldn't have used it.Congratulations by the way.Enjoy these magical first weeks.

Definitely give the cat a nickname and stick with that - it could be related to the name eg. Jazz or just puss or something. How about Per (purr, geddit?)

When I read 'Fluffy Dave' I nearly wet myself!

Thanks everyone, excellent suggestions. Still dithering about what to do mind!

I have a similar dilema - the name we want for our baby is very, very similar to our cat's name....The cat is Ruby, and we love Rudy for a boy's name.

So thinking of changing cat's name to Scarlett...

choccyp1g · 17/05/2010 15:29

Jaspuss ?

ihearthuckabees · 17/05/2010 15:28

I think it would be quite funny just to have two Jaspers in the house, Jasper Boy and Jasper Cat.

If nothing else, it will give your DS a story to dine out on when he's frown up. "Yeah, my parents, they were such wags, they named me after their cat..."

Acanthus · 17/05/2010 15:18

Ah there you are you see - Jasper IS a cat's name, not a boy's name.

Lifeinagoldfishbowl · 17/05/2010 15:13

My cat is called Jasper - she's a girl

gagamama · 17/05/2010 15:07

Jasper is lovely! Can you just call the cat Casper? It won't know the difference.

pixiestix · 17/05/2010 14:57

Brogan - "The cat will be dead soon!!

Whoah!! Brutal and to the point there, Brogan!!!

MrsMiamla · 17/05/2010 14:49

oh Jasper is a lovely name for your DS.

You could be quite cunning and change the cat's name to 'casper'. But actually, our cat was called 'kudos' but was called (amongst other things) 'carrot' by DH. And as Poledra said, cats really really don't care as long as you feed them!

notso · 17/05/2010 12:48

PMSL at Geoff the cat, DD called her rabbit Fluffy Dave

I was betting on Felix.

I like Jasper, edwardcullens suggestion is good one.

edwardcullensotherwoman · 17/05/2010 12:32

That's a lovely name! Why not call the cat Jazz, and call ds Jasper? (Or the other way around, depends how you feel about calling a baby Jazz I suppose)

That way they both keep their names, the birth certificate stays in its original state, but you don't feel weird calling your cat and ds by the same name.

horsechesnut · 17/05/2010 12:25

Jasper.

Cat does not give a shit what you call it, as long as you keep on filling the food bowl - give it another name and keep your DS's name the same. What cats hear

MrsMiamla · 17/05/2010 11:41

gah! do we still not know what OP's cat/DS are called?!

fairimum · 17/05/2010 11:29

We very nearly called our DS Oscar which was the cats name... had decided that the cat would become Mr O which worked fine... until 4 other babies on the ward were called Oscar!

LynetteScavo · 16/05/2010 18:36

Unless it's Merlin. Then you have a problem.

Jamieandhismagictorch · 16/05/2010 18:24

Is the cat called Nigel? My friend had a dog called Simon - very un-dog-like

I would change the cats name

LynetteScavo · 16/05/2010 17:02

Right, I've given this lots of serious thought, and you need to change the cats name.

For now, call the cat Cat, then in a few weeks give it a new name.

Is it Woody?
