How do you pronounce Iseult?

I was at school with a girl named Iseult - she pronounced it 'Iz-elt', but I suspect this isn't the usual way.

Any ideas?

I know of two both pronounce it Eees ult.

I almost like it,but it's so close to INsult ....

ellesabe · 15/05/2010 23:47

Iz-yult

LuluF · 15/05/2010 16:39

Actually, FrakkedUp, that's too funny. They must know, surely?

I'd assume it would sound quite similar to 'assault'.

...which would put me off.....

ConDemNation · 15/05/2010 16:21

Sorry but it reminds me too much of insult.

mathanxiety · 15/05/2010 16:19

FrakkedUp, that is truly funny.

FrakkedUpTheElection · 15/05/2010 11:50

I can't wait to tell them that....

Did I mention that they're twins?

And very touchy about having separate identities?

mathanxiety · 14/05/2010 14:51

Your cousins do indeed have versions of the same name, FrakkedUpTheElection.

FrakkedUpTheElection · 14/05/2010 13:09

Yseult/Iseult and Ysolde/Isolde are different names though. Or my cousins have different variations of the same name, which would amuse me greatly

LuluF · 14/05/2010 10:31

Maybe too many potential variations to consider, then. You can imagine a life time of people getting it wrong and having to correct it.

Thanks for all the advice.

I would say ISOLDE as well. It is a French version and eult in French is pronounced as we would pronounce euh - l -t. Not easy for the British so I would probably just plump from ISOLDE if I liked the name

FrakkedUpTheElection · 13/05/2010 18:39

My cousin Yseult says it Eez-ult. We have a weird thing for Y names in our family and they all start with the Ee sound (except Ysabel). Irish though, picking up on the Dublin point above.

Jamieandhismagictorch · 13/05/2010 18:36

Oh yes. Thanks MrsvWoolf

Isn't Whatsisname (Strider) Iseult's heir in Lord of the Rings?

FlyMeToDunoon · 13/05/2010 17:45

E-uz ult

mathanxiety · 13/05/2010 17:44

The one I knew was Ees-ult (maybe a Dublin pronunciation).

pixiestix · 13/05/2010 17:32

Another vote for Iz-olt

BessieBoots · 13/05/2010 16:44

Esyllt is pronounced Ess-eellt.

Lovethesea · 13/05/2010 16:29

I would say Iz-ult

Lionstar · 13/05/2010 16:11

Originally comes from the Welsh Esyllt

I would say Iz-olt

BessieBoots · 13/05/2010 16:08

I thought it was eye-zey-ult

legallyblond · 13/05/2010 16:07

Iz-olt.... because its a form of Isolde, as in Tristan and, right?

whatwasthatagain · 13/05/2010 15:33

Yer sult

weasle · 13/05/2010 15:29
