What do you think of the name Summer for my baby due the start of September?

Middle name would be my late nan's so would be:

Summer Eleanora

Yes, very true vicbar so hard not to feel a little sad when you hear lots of negative things about a name you start to love for your dc (although that is the whole point of posting on a baby name thread !)

Bibithree, yes I also thought about the adult thing too (how it sounds as they get older) but I also thought the same as you that, as it's becoming more popular now it shouldn't stand out as a strange adult name in years to come.

It's so hard - we also like Jemima but I just don't know if it suits us as a family really... I know that sounds strange ! I just don't know.

I think I'm still waiting for a name to suddenly pop out at me and I'll think 'THAT'S THE ONE !' but I just don't think that's going to happen

I'm not sure Summer goes with Eleanora. I love Eleanora but am not keen on Summer. Think it's a v pretty little girls name, but not sure how well it translates into an adult. Having siad that, there are lots of Summers now so she won't be alone

If you like it and dh likes it, why not?

janeite · 12/05/2010 21:21

Eleanora is fine; Summer is not good imho. Elinor is gorgeous.

vicbar · 12/05/2010 21:19

People have to add the negs thats the reason they joined MN.
I like it but I also like Summer Eloise as someone mentioned earlier.

There's a British porn star called Summer Rain.
Sorry, not helpful

notso · 12/05/2010 10:09

I know three Summers, two are cute under three's the other one is a 15yo goth who hates her name, not saying this will be your DD but worth thinking about.

annasophia · 12/05/2010 10:02

I don't like it at all, I'm afraid. It just doesn't sound like a name to my ears.

And try pronouncing it in any other language than English - not good!

diddl · 12/05/2010 07:10

Horrible.

florence2511 · 12/05/2010 02:29

Eleanora Summer sounds better in my opinion

It is gorgeous.

Violet5 · 11/05/2010 16:54

I have a Summer Eloise, so obviously i love it .
Some of our elderly relatives thought it was a terrible name though, not that i'm particularly fond of their names Janet and Joan lol so i don't mind that they don't like it !

Angela82 · 11/05/2010 16:46

haha, that is so funny Psammead because that is exactly what I was about to say to dh when he gets in from work !

When he said it didn't sound right I felt like I had to ask the mumsnetters to prove I'm not thinking up mad names that don't go well together

I have considered it being just Summer Eleanor actually as I figure it's still in tribute to my nan. We originally loved Jemima too and I would use Eleanor with that as opposed to Eleanora as it had too many 'a's on the end otherwise.

I'll let him know the mumsnet verdict when he's back !

If it were my DD I'd possibly tweak the middle name to Eleanor. Summer Eleanor sounds a bit nicer to my ears - but then it wouldn't really be naming her for your grandmother. It's very beautiful without any tweaking, though!

Tell DH that the mumsnet jury have decided that it sounds just fine!

Angela82 · 11/05/2010 16:28

Oh good, for some reason I thought I was going to get lots of negative comments ! It just seems like a really happy smiley name to me (which some people don't like, but I do!).

My dh doesnt think Summer Eleanora sounds good together for some strange reason and I think it sounds nice? He has suggested Summer Rose but it's just so popular to have that middle name now isn't it? And sounds a little OTT to me too....
