Im expecting dc 1 and we don't know the gender. We have a shortlist for a boy; Sonnie, Freddie, Cassius.

We can't agree on a girls name though, I like flowery names like Daisy, Flora etc but dh came across the name Minnie and I think I like it apart from the minnie mouse thing.

Opinions please

mrsrhettbutler- I know I asked for advice and i am grateful for peoples opinions. I am not set on using the name but neither am I going to cross it off the list.

Im not so concerned about the teasing because I think even with a popular name children will find something to tease about.

Magaly-yes Bonnie is nice also like Connie.

What about Bonnie OP? it has something of the same vibe I think, but is less risky.

Will is different from Minnie though, because it is so mainstream that it no longer causes people to stop and think, hey! that's a word for penis. It really has two meanings. Penis and then entirely separately, it's also a boys' name.

I don't think you can take an obscure name like minnie and apply the same 'logic' because our perceptions aren't entirely logical.

The only Minnie I ever knew was Miriam. She was Minnie and now she is Miriam. That tells me Minnie is not a great name when you hit your 30s.

Don't like Minnie at all (although Minnie Driver is a great actress her name is Amelia).

It's too 'cutey' as a name for a growing girl - fine when you are preschool as a nn but after that I would hate to be so limited. Makes me think of the mouse too.

You may not move and she may stay where you live now for the rest of her life too but if you name her Minnie she will be teased.

the point of naming her something else is so that when she is 30 she can use the longer version of her name if she so wishes... or even if she is 10 and getting teased...

the thing is, you asked advice and got it. If you are set on the name then use it but i think people are just trying to warn you that the problem may arise.

I don't really like the idea of naming her something else and the using Minnie as a nn because surely she is just going to be known as Minne then anyway?

Ballpointpen-But surely I can't not use a name I like just on the off chance we may move? Will is a popular name but then willy is a nn for male genitalia?

I also like the fact that it is a diminutive of Mary as that is my great aunts name but I wouldn't use Mary as imo it's old fashioned.

I like Bonnie, but Minnie ........ I just hear 'mouse' hanging in the air after it. sorry. Although I really love the name Donald. So maybe IABU

You and/or your potential DD might not always live where you do now, you may move somewhere where mini is used by the majority of people who have small children.

It would not be a nice thing to be called the same as a vagina.

I like Cassius a lot though.

I like MrsRhettButler's idea of having a longer full name. Apparently Mary can have the diminutive of Minnie. Or how about

Honestly - please try it on a passing 6 year old first - it would be a nightmare to be called Minnie in ds's class. Truly.

As I said i don't think it is used as a nickname for genitals around here.

Ineedsomesleep- Glad somebody likes it I was starting to panic. Luckily it's one of the very few names we can agree on.

Hermione is nice but then there's the Harry Potter connection.

That's what we use to refer to vulvas/vaginas and we are by no means alone. I would advise strongly against it.

I've never heard of genitalia being referred to as Minnie. It puts a new slant of the world record of how many people can fit in a Mini.

Absolutely love the name btw. It was on my list for DC2 but DH vetoed it.

I work with pre-school aged children so am pretty sure it's not used much where I live.

Hmm this naming business is a minefield isn't it.
