Im expecting dc 1 and we don't know the gender. We have a shortlist for a boy; Sonnie, Freddie, Cassius.

We can't agree on a girls name though, I like flowery names like Daisy, Flora etc but dh came across the name Minnie and I think I like it apart from the minnie mouse thing.

Opinions please

Do people use their middle names though? I can't even remember the last time I had to write mine on a form let alone say it out loud.

If I moved countries and discovered my first name meant labia majora in the local slang I too would probably want to use my middle name, but it would be WEIRD. My middle name isn't my name. And blimey if my dds felt they had to change their names because they were being teased, well there would be tears... LOTS of tears

How about Randy for a boy? Lots of Americans don;t see a problem with it. Oh, and what about Roger? I think Dick has already been suggested......

Rockbird obviously I have thought how it would be to have Minnie as a name I wouldn't have considered it otherwise. It is a proper name not a made up name. Thanks for your opinion though.

Mouse or Riperton. Neither a good association. It's a nothingy name, as a pp said, a nn not a proper name.

Sometimes I think people suggesting names on these threads need to take a step back and think how it would be for the offspring they're landing with these names. It's fine to like a daft name but you're not the one stuck with it.

Slubber-Her choosing to use a middle name that she has had all her life is different to chanching her name to something she has never used I think. Yes there are millions of other names but I came on here to talk about Minnie.

Brogan-fufu seems to be the norm

Redrobin-thats a fab story and your granny sounds like an amazing woman .

Don't like Minnie. It sounds like a nn, but then again I prefer "proper" names with the option of a nn.

My amazing incredible (welsh) granny was called Minnie. She was the first woman in Scotland to run a children's home (for the local authority) so I doubt she was hindered in her career by her name being 'cute' or whatever. When it comes down to it, a personality can transcend a name. When she died, aged 85, she was the most loved person i know, and she still got over 100 christmas cards from 'her' children (ie ones she'd had in her care).

I'm obviously biased (!), butI'd go for it, if you love it.

So I have never heard Minnie = vagina, however now I know it's really common I would never use it. However I wouldn't use it anyway as it isn't very flexible for a not so cute as a button quiet/shy 14 year old. Or a 34 year old applying for a job as a structural engineer. Go with Mary or Minette.

There prob won't be a Janet or a Pamela in the class.

Sonny is nice, my grandfathers name, common in immigrant families I thought (though as a nick name).

It's a bit of an upheaval for anyone, child or woman to have to change their name at any time. If you want to put your daughter through that because you love the name then go for it. Comes across as a somewhat selfish decision when there are a bazillion other names out there that don't mean vagina though.

Have you heard the name Linnet - she was a character in the Green Knowe childrens books.

Similar in sound to Minnie, and nature themed too.

yes alfie and archie have got v popular i like cassius being shortened to cass v nice and prob not v popular which is good! :O X

Yummie no not too harsh it's good to get opinions good or bad. I like Freddie but we are leaning more to Cassius with nn Cass. I do like Alfie or Archie but it's got so popular lately.

I think having a longer name on her birth certificate and using Minnie as a nickname will give her the most options through her life.

You could choose any name with an M and an N - Araminta, Melinda, Imogen etc.

I'm in south east England and have heard minnie used for girls bits here. It made me giggle the other day when I heard an advert on TV - 'I play with my mini.....Baby Born'. But I've also heard Tilly used as a word for genitals and lots of little girls have that name.

i hope i wasnt being too harsh .... now alfie is nice i dunno when i hear sonnie i hear sonny and cher and just think its a bit of a daft name? but everyone is different and likes different names have you got any other names for a boy?? x

slubber- why don't you read the thread before you make assumptions I had already said that if she moved or if Minnie started being used as a nn around here then she could use her middle name.

Brockley-I think the same would apply if she had any type of feminine name. So it is a risk.

Beccas-Yes Fifi is a very common name for it here too.

Minnie def a name for female genitalia amongst small children around here........I did meet a little girl called Fanny - I kid you not......Apparently she was Swedish and it's a very common name there.

I think as we live in a global village that anyone would be crazy to call a child Minnie nowadays.......

We call our girls bits Mini as well.... so do all my mum friends
But my sister calls her girls bits Fifi and then the cartoon was invented.... so you can't win.
If you can get over the reference to bits and pieces, then I LOVE the name.
