Im expecting dc 1 and we don't know the gender. We have a shortlist for a boy; Sonnie, Freddie, Cassius.

We can't agree on a girls name though, I like flowery names like Daisy, Flora etc but dh came across the name Minnie and I think I like it apart from the minnie mouse thing.

Opinions please

So - what do you expect people to say? Yes of course it's OK to call your child a name that in most parts of the country will promote giggles if not worse?

I was the first to post about the minnie=vulva reference. In no post was I rude or aggressive. I thought I'd just engaged in constructive conversation.

StayFrosty-Your right it seems im expected to stop liking it because some people on mn told me so. It's been great to get opinions but as you say some people have got agressive because they don't like what I have said.

Seeker-I nor anybody I know liken Minnie to those other names. Minnie does not MEAN vulva it is apparently a slang term it's not as if im going to name her vagina. You seem to expect me to say oh well forget that name well sorry but im not.

no - I DON"T expect you to like them - that"s the POINT! I expect you to realize that the name you have unwillingly chosen is in the same category, and that you can no more say "Oh well, Minnie means vulva, but I like it so I'll call my dd it anyway" than you can say "Oh well, Dick means penis, but I like it so I'll call my son it anyway!"

You are being sarcastic suggesting names that relate to genitalia because I UNKNOWINGLY choose a name that is used as a nn. I choose the name because I like it so now you expect me to like Roger, Randy or Dick because according to you it has similar meanings.

Gosh, I've never heard the minnie = vulva thing before.

I have a friend and a relative who both have had Minnies in the past couple of years.

mrs smurf- yes it is a shame and although it wouldnt be my choice (simple because i think she may be teased) i still think if its name u and ur partner are keen on then use it x

I wasn't being sarcastic. I was trying - in vain obviously - to point out the impossiblity of calling a child in this day and age Minnie. (Bizarrely my redoubtable and remarkable grandmother was also called Minnie!) If you think I am being sarcastic suggesting Roger, Dick or Randy, why on earth are you still even giving the slightest consideration to Minnie????

Yummiemummie-Thanks,luckily I have thick skin let's hope if I have a dd she does too .

It's a shame people have to act childish it really spoils mumsnet.

DH has to use his middle name all the time thanks to a stupid family tradition of first born son naming and it's a PITA. We've had to shell out for replacement plane tickets when people have booked them in his middle name, he was refused a mobile phone contract because his dad had the same name, same address etc. He's had to return wrongly written cheques. I had to stand in church and marry a man with a completely different name to the name I knew. Might not sound much but I didn't really want to say my vows to 'John'. Using your middle name is not the easy option everyone seems to think.

Im often called by my name and middle name by family so it all depends I suppose on how much we would use her middle name anyway.

As I said I can't see her being teased as a child because it isn't used here and if when she was older and wanted a more grown up name then she would have her middle name. It's just like Milly etc are more suited to younger children.

Just showed this to dh and he was suprised too but we still like it.
