we have a lorelei and a minerva at school. I'd go for azalea at a push. is this your short list or would you consider widening the search?

Louplet · 06/05/2010 18:41

I like Juno and Lorelei.

MamaLazarou · 06/05/2010 18:28

I don't like Azalea or Juno. The rest are all lovely.

GreatGooglyMoogly · 06/05/2010 17:21

Only Callia.

mathanxiety · 06/05/2010 17:04

Callia/ Calla -- Calla is nice, Callia no
Minerva -- Very nice
Eulalie -- Eulalia is nicer, imo, but I prefer Mahalia if you want to go with Deep South old lady names
Mimosa -- a drink
Juno -- Very nice, the film is history
Cerelia -- makes me think of some cerebral problem
Azalea -- nice
Lorelei -- bad mythical associations
Ginevra -- nice

Try shouting them across a crowded supermarket or a carpark. That should narrow it down.

I have an unusual name [at least when I was a child, there seem to be more of them around now] and I was forever telling people how to spell/pronounce it. I didn't like it and wished I had been called Vicky, Emma or Sarah [of which there were several in my year]
If you desperately love the name then use it of course, or why not give it as a second name?

AngryPixie · 06/05/2010 13:26

Only Juno

swanandduck · 06/05/2010 13:17

Sorry, but I don't like any of those names. I can just see the amused looks of other parents in the park when you're shouting 'Azalea and Eulalie, we're going home now'. They just sound pretentious and desperate to scream 'look how different and quirky we are'.

Bonsoir · 06/05/2010 12:08

I think CotedAzur has summed up very succinctly the reason why unusual names are are generally a bad idea.

I have a friend who has got the unique-name unique-child syndrome very badly indeed. In fact, she is so busy ensuring her children are unique that she completely forgets to cover the basics - think child who does Mandarin lessons but cannot ride a bicycle...

Pasiphae · 06/05/2010 11:47

Callia/ Calla: it is a bit unfinished.
Minerva: Love it, nice sounds, nice nickname.
Eulalie (you-lay-lee): looks pretty, sounds awful. All heavy and self inflated.
Mimosa: A bit daft.
Juno: godess, film, a bit too much...
Cerelia (se-ray-le-ah)= will be called Cereal.
Azalea: I love it, but I like the flowers and the flower name trend.
Lorelei: very sweet.
Ginevra (gin-ev-ra): lovely too.

Psammead · 06/05/2010 11:26

Callia/ Calla - Very pretty!
Minerva - Harry Potter
Eulalie (you-lay-lee) - Ukulele
Mimosa - isn't that also something from Harry Potter?
Juno - not keen
Cerelia (se-ray-le-ah) - quite pretty
Azalea - bit sci-fi sounding!
Lorelei - quite nice
Ginevra (gin-ev-ra) - sounds like Geneva, but doesn't sound like a person's name.

For me, Callia or Calla is the best by a long way.

ShadeofViolet · 06/05/2010 10:29

Callia/ Calla - Like it alot
Minerva - Reminds me of Harry Potter
Eulalie (you-lay-lee) - Meh
Mimosa - sounds like Samosa
Juno - People will just think you copied the film
Cerelia (se-ray-le-ah) - sounds like Celery
Azalea - Lile it
Lorelei - Not keen
Ginevra (gin-ev-ra)- sounds like a gum disease.

EdgarAllenPoll · 06/05/2010 10:20

i remembered why i didn't like Juno as a name...'Juno-esque' = fat.

hazeyjane · 06/05/2010 10:09

Juno is a great name.

Lorelei is a bit Beverley Hill Billies for me.

Bonsoir · 06/05/2010 10:02

I'm not sure that's true and, even if it were, why does it matter?

choosyfloosy · 06/05/2010 10:02

Callia/ Calla - I like this.

Minerva - Not wild because she would be Min which I'm not keen on personally.

Eulalie - OK sorry, LOL at this one, which is not ideal really - although there's a certain style about naming your daughter after one of the best jokes in the world. Are you looking to pay tribute to P g Wodehouse generally??

Mimosa - Pretty. Good choice IMO.

Juno - Like, but it will date her in age very precisely, does that bother you?

Cerelia (se-ray-le-ah) - TBH there's something I don't like about this.

Azalea - NO. There's a difference between a garden catalogue and a baby names book for a reason.

Lorelei - I like it but it's not very classy IMO.

Ginevra (gin-ev-ra) - Like, except for Gin as a nickname. Do you have another child you could call Tonicka?

Rockbird · 06/05/2010 09:54

Cerelia is beautiful. Not keen on the others.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 06/05/2010 09:53

Juno

Ginevre and Mimosa are both alcoholic drinks.

Acanthus · 06/05/2010 09:49

But Anna everyone will assume she was named for Ginny in Harry Potter, because of the timimg.

LaDiDaDi · 06/05/2010 09:29

I like Calla.

Bonsoir · 06/05/2010 09:29

Ginevra is beautiful.

I don't like any of the others at all. Lorelei in particular is to be avoided at all costs.

pedrothellama · 06/05/2010 09:27

If you like the 'other wordly' names how about Persephone (Per - seff - onie) the Goddess who ate 9 pomegrante in Hades and brings spring to the world

I think is is very pretty

reikizen · 06/05/2010 09:24

"Trying too hard" in this context means OP is obviously trying to bestow uniqueness on her baby by bracing her with a very rare name that everyone will oooh and aaah at. The kind of name that will, when she is rich and famous, shine on magazine covers a la Beyonce, and her admirers will know who she is just from her first name, no last name needed.

I'm guessing
