Traditional baby boy names

My husband and I are trying to find a name for our baby boy. We're both traditional and would like a longer name as the family name is short. DH has proposed Harold which I am not so keen on. He has said no to Richard, James, William, Benjamin, Alexander etc.

We're looking for a really old, unusual name. British or Greek. My dd has a name no one else has and we'd like to see if we can find a name for the new arrival that would keep with that.

Please let me know your ideas.

Oh yes Percy is great!

Just heard a Basil speak on the radio or is that too reminiscent of a certain fox with a hugely irritating laugh?

giddywithglee · 07/05/2010 11:45

mumofeight I love the name Percy!

Ooh, so many nice names. It's late for me where I am but will be reading them properly in the morning.

Thank you, lots of food for thought.

Loving Nestor! But our surname starts with a 'N' sound...hmmm...

Anyway, lots of gorgeous and unusual baby names. Thank you!

Edwin.

sonniboo · 05/05/2010 16:40

Love most of these names, although I'm not that keen on Harold. I do love Quentin, Monty and Alexander.

LuluF · 05/05/2010 16:03

Ptolemy is great - there's one at nursery - known as 'Tolly' which I think is nice.

I heard Esmond too, which has grown on me.

weasle · 05/05/2010 15:00

Harold is nice and will be shortened to Harry i would think.

Bartholomew?
Constantine?
Aristotle??
Alexander & Nicholas are nice
Ptolemy is fab, but i don't have the courage

PaulinePetrovaPosy · 05/05/2010 14:36

Hector
Nestor

bigbluebump · 05/05/2010 14:34

We are also still trying to choose a name for our bump. We also have a short surname so don't want a short name/nickname.

My favourites include

Tobias
Quentin
Vincent
Monty (Montgomery)

eatyourveg · 05/05/2010 14:31

I went to school with a Ptolemy (Ptol) his brother was Caesar and there was also a Saul.

I like Rufus but it is short. Also like Edmund, Horatio (Harry?), Wilberforce (Will) and Alfred

*thinking not thining

GuntherMcKilocodie · 05/05/2010 14:20

Harold reminds me of Steptoe and Son. Can't hear it without thining of that vile gurning old tramp screaming 'Arold!!

annasophia · 05/05/2010 14:15

Quentin

kittyonthebeam · 05/05/2010 10:12

It's not that I can't live with 'Harold', it's just that it wouldn't be my first choice and I wondered what you all thought of that anyway. My girlfriends all think it's an old man's name.

I like Howard, Edward, Gregory, Stanley, Clifford,.. must look through lists properly and show DH.

I can't give my dd's name because I'd out myself as no one has used it on MN. It's very old greek, popular around the time of the Delphic Oracle.

traceybath · 05/05/2010 10:00

Theodore is lovely.

DS2's middle name is Montgomery which I think is lovely.

zaidagal · 05/05/2010 09:59

Theodore (with teddy for short)

My fave - Alexander - although I realize you husband has already said no!

Thadeus

Jonathon

Nicholas

Corneleus (Neely for short - like in the book "a tree grows in brooklyn")
