a proper name for 'Posy'

I love the name Posy, but feel that it's all very well being called Posy when you're a cute baby, but when you're a grown woman, it's not so appropriate.

I know that Posy is a diminutive of Josephine - the thing is we have a Joseph already - so that's a no no.

I'm trying to thing of other names that could be shortened to Posy. I thought of Jocelyn or even Rosalind, but husband remains unconvinced.

Any suggestions?

Posy will be going to secondary school this year. I wonder what her name is. Please out us out of our misery.

How the hell do you get Posy from Pauline???

Zombie thread

The Posy I know is Rosanna really - as in Rosy Posy. It’s only childhood friends that call her Posy...

diddlediddle · 04/05/2021 19:50

Don't use Penelope Rose or anything else Rose. It's the mooosssst boring middle name and pretty much all the girls born recently I know have got it! So tedious!

Plus is very engineered to be like oh her name is Penelope Rose but we're going to call her Posy.

Posy on its own is far more original and fresh. Don't overthink it!!

GinPin2 · 04/05/2021 19:36

@LuluF, my daughter is expecting her second baby, already has Flora.
If a girl they have agreed on Posy which I think is lovely.
I thought @Magaly's idea of Penelope Rose was a brilliant idea.
What did you choose in the end ? Flowers Smile

LuluF · 06/05/2010 10:37

Oh no, I've decided the cat's going to be called Trilby - which I'll never be able to use as a first name for a girl because my DH thinks it's silly.

Save it for the cat

LuluF · 06/05/2010 09:09

I love Poppet - I wanted that as a middle name for our eldest girl - but was not allowed

My daughter´s nn is Poppy-totally unrelated to he given name(s)-because I used to call her Poppet!

LuluF · 05/05/2010 23:19

Ah - that explains the Barbies with wings we have in our house then!

The family from one end street! There's a blast from the past, I read all those.
Agree Rosie is nice, can definately become Posy

weegiemum · 05/05/2010 22:43

Mariposa is the Spanish for butterfly.

Pretty.

And a range of Barbies, sadly!

LuluF · 05/05/2010 22:41

I ran Rosemary/Rosa/Rose by DH. He pulled a face.

I shall save Mimosa/Mariposa for tomorrow (isn't Mariposa a range of Barbies, though?).

Posy Simmonds is Rosemary Elizabeth, but is still called Posy even though she's a grown woman...

alfiemama · 05/05/2010 18:46

Ooh could you have Posy as a middle name?

alfiemama · 05/05/2010 18:45

I like Primrose, but hubby won't let me have it
I think Posy is lovely.

LuluF · 05/05/2010 18:31

I mentioned Dr Pixie McKenna to my Mum today! You wouldn't mess with her would you?
Maybe it's not as problematic as I'm making it.

A name is not necessarily a straight jacket -- there's Dr Pixie McKenna after all. I could see a Dr Posy or solicitor Posy or bank officer Posy...

mollymax · 05/05/2010 16:24

Our dd2 nickname is nothing like her "real" name. We call her Pip,derived from pipsqueak, as she is so small, as her nn which she answers to at home but is known as her real name at school. I love the name Posy and as mentioned can easily be a nn for Rose/Rosie/Rosemary.

LuluF · 05/05/2010 16:15

Mimosa and Mariposa - I could, you know. I'm just imagining the faces of my in-laws... it's almost worth it for that alone!

Yes Penelope Rose is lovely.

redrobin · 05/05/2010 13:40

i've got a Rose who is firmly a Posy. love it! (ballet shoes my influence too!)
