Thalia?

MuffinsMummy · 25/04/2010 21:27

I have two DDs Aimee Rachael and Caitlin Louise. I am 25 weeks pregnant and even though I didnt find out I think it will be a girl again.

Someone I know to say hello to is called Thalia and I quite like it. DH, who is very fussy with names and never likes my suggestions, likes it too.

The problem I have is I mentioned it to my friend and she pulled a face of pure disgust! Then when I put it with our surname said oh my god its getting worse!

Is Thalia really that bad?

My surname is Prynn by the pay, pronounced Prinn.

My DSD is Thalia (Nathalia on birth certificate) - it really suits her but Thalia sounds like an incomplete name to me, but maybe thats just because its what I'm used to.

Jenbot · 27/04/2010 11:50

It's a nice name, ignore your friend!

kailie · 27/04/2010 08:38

beautiful name. I love it. unusual without being weird...just wonderful!

Ignore the friend. She had an incredibly tactless moment....

I mean, some names inevitably invite more comment than others ("heavenly hiraani tiger lily" for example!) ....but it's still very rude to pull faces over name choices.

If we all liked the same names there would be 10000000's of talia's running around so don't be put off if someone isn't so keen. Everyone has their own preferences....stick to yours!

Our Talia is Talsy or Talsy bops or just plain Tals

I have researched her name a while back when deciding whether to use it or not and it is definitely Hebrew from the male Tal meaning Dew from heaven which is lovely I thought.

We went with Talia to avoid confusion as well.

minipie · 26/04/2010 21:16

I really like it - might go for Talia to avoid THalia pronunciation.

But what could you have as a nn? Tally?

littlemissm · 26/04/2010 21:03

APassionateWoman- how is Tahlia a made up spelling it is Hebrew?

littlemissm · 26/04/2010 20:59

My daughter is Tahlia pronounced Tah lee ah. Talia i would pronouce Ta lee ah & Thalia i would pronounce Tha lee ah

APassionateWoman · 26/04/2010 18:41

Thalia is also the Hebrew spelling.

I know two Thalias (not Greek or Israeli/Jewish!) and they both spell it this way. Definitely the classiest, least made up spelling. Tahlia looks like a bastardisation of Dahlia.

mathanxiety · 26/04/2010 17:25

Very nice, and I love having names for your DDs that are all so different. Ignore the rude friend -- you can't please everyone.

GrimmaTheNome · 26/04/2010 16:52

Hullygully · 26/04/2010 16:01

Make mine a veggie and you're on.

toomuchtooyoung · 26/04/2010 16:00

I am one, and your friend sounds delightful!

It's a very Greek name and growing up in the 70's with it did cause a few pronounciation problems, even within my own multicultural family! Now I automatically spell it without being prompted. It doesn't bother me, and is a great conversation starter

Everyone has always commented positively on it, and people will always remember her name, it's much better to be an original!

Oh, and it's pronounced THA-lee-ah

sweetkitty · 26/04/2010 08:09

I am Mum of a 4 year old Talia and we adore her name and are always being commented on it.

Talia and Tahlia are Hebrew meaning Dew from Heaven
Thalia is Greek

We went with Talia as thought it would be easier to spell and pronounce and Thalia might be pronounced THA-lee-ah instead of TAH-Lee-ah

Some people pronounce her name Tal-Yar though

Do not discuss names in RL before the baby is born and anyway your friend has no taste

BlauerEngel · 26/04/2010 08:04

Mmm, Thalia is frequently used as a cinema name in Germany (the equivalent of Odeon) and is also a large chain of bookshops. Do you maybe want to check that it doesn't have weird connotations in other cultures?

Is it pronounced TAHlia in the UK? I only know it as Ta-LEEa.

twosofar · 26/04/2010 07:51

It'll be mispronounced forever if you spell it Thalia - depends whether that will bother you

LadyThompson · 25/04/2010 22:48

Lovely name, though prefer Talia spelling. Very elegant.

Ivykaty44 · 25/04/2010 21:50

I know a beautiful Thalia, with a sister Larissa they are of greek descent and the names suit them both, very beautiful girls

MuffinsMummy · 25/04/2010 21:48

I like the fact that Aimee, Caitlin and Thalia are all quite different. They start and end with different sounds (though dont know why I like that!)

i like thalia.

DeborahDevonshire · 25/04/2010 21:44

Thalia is a lovely name I think - a really good choice. She was one of the three graces in Greek Mythology as well iirc.

Definitely the spelling Thalia though, nopt the others.
