Wanderingsheep · 26/04/2010 07:13

It's beautiful! It's my DD's middle name but with the 'ph' spelling.

giraffesCANdriveAcar · 26/04/2010 05:43

Lovely name. Name niece is called Sofia. I have lots of suitable nicknames if you need them? (poor child shes only 8 months) - Sofable, Sof, Sofette, Sofiabombia

purlcity · 26/04/2010 00:48

Cheers Jajas and Fizzledrizzle!

Well, thanks to this thread (and the spelling debate) I've just discovered it's a good thing I changed my mind as me and DH would have had a minor scrap over the spelling...

He's Cypriot and is adamant that we would have used the 'ph' spelling. I might have had to play the '42 weeks of throwing up, then squeezing an almost 10lb baby out of my nethers' card to win Oh well, her actual name suits her better anyway.

SofiaAmes · 25/04/2010 05:36

Well, since it's my name, I'm a little partial to it. Personally I think the Sofia spelling is much more beautiful. And of course being of Italian heritage, I don't think it should be spelled any other way. Although I do have to frequently spell it for people, I have much more trouble with misspelling here in the USA than I did in England. I also have to remind people that it's Sofia and not Sofie. I have very much enjoyed being called Sofia, so would recommend it for your dd.

nannyj · 25/04/2010 05:29

I read the thread as what do you think of my sofa!!!!! Thought I'd be getting a look at a nice sofa to judge

very nice name though.

kimbles1984 · 25/04/2010 04:52

serenity not so weird, my ds' name is Aidan, yet i hate the name Aiden!

kimbles1984 · 25/04/2010 04:50

I like the name Sophia, although i am put off, as a friend called her dd Sofia after she gave birth to her on the sofa! my opinion is biased though! lol

JeMeSouviens · 25/04/2010 02:59

DS1 would have been Sofia Elizabeth. Love it with the F spelling.

fizzledrizzle · 25/04/2010 01:36

Sofia Carlotta - how lovely.

StableButDeluded · 25/04/2010 01:27

I really like it, don't mind which spelling. I was at primary school with a Sophia and I've liked it ever since. Never met another one though.

Incidentally, how are we pronouncing it? Because the girl I knew was a 'sof-eye-a' not a 'sof-ee-a' (as in sofia loren) IYSWIM.

@ mathanxiety

Actually Sophia is the Romanicised (i.e. transliterated into the Roman alphabet) version. In Greek the 'ph' is actually one letter (phi). While words in English that have 'ph' are often derived from Greek words, that is just due to a transliteration tradition.

Basically, Sophia is just as similar to the original Greek as Sofia, although arguably Sofia is closer as it has the same number of letters

purlcity · 25/04/2010 00:17

I love, love, love, love Sofia.....my eldest daughter is Sofia Carlotta....but my husband is Italian and I am of 'forrin' origin....so we are biased towards this spelling..........

The 'ph' spelling of the name almost seems like a completely different name to me but not in a bad way, I think it is pretty too.

Oh, and no one has ever mistaken my daughter for a sofa!

FanjolinaJolie · 24/04/2010 22:21

Sophia is a lovely name

Rockbird · 24/04/2010 21:01

Sophia much prettier. I know one little Sofia but her parents are Spanish.

mathanxiety · 24/04/2010 20:37

the PH spelling is closer to the Greek origin.

twosofar · 24/04/2010 16:51

If you are Italian/Spanish etc then Sofia is fine, otherwise I think Sophia looks way prettier and way more sophisticated

MrsMargate · 24/04/2010 16:05

Sofia is the capital city of Bulgaria.

She will end up having it misspelled her whole life.

Go for Sophia.

Bucharest · 24/04/2010 15:54

Like it, but prefer Sophia, as I always think of Sofas when I see the other spelling.

Polgara2 · 24/04/2010 15:45

Love it and definitely spell it Sofia!

padraig · 24/04/2010 15:28

I love Sofia, definitely the better spelling too.

If it were my DD though I wouldn't let her end up a Sophie. Really don't like Sophie. Would make a point of smacking anyone calling her Sophie until they stopped.

mmrsceptic · 24/04/2010 13:57

stunning -- Tom Jones

and the nickname is sophs

jennifersofia · 24/04/2010 13:50
