Do you regret your name choice?

I love both DCs names but I sometimes wish I had called DD Hermione, I will always be a little sad that I didn't get to use it. I was luckier with DS as DH couldn't think of a name he liked so I got my way with that one

Anyone else?

i love the name Eva

Psammead · 24/04/2010 16:44

I love my daughter's name, although I do look at her sometimes and feel that she suits our second choice, Alice, even better. I wouldn't change it though.

I actually never liked my first name.

It's not that my first name is in anyway bad, I don't know it just never felt like my name.

When I left school and got to university I started using my middle name instead. Haven't looked back since.

That's why I think it's important to consider both first and middle names carefully, as if they don't like the first they can always use their middle name like I do now

bytheMoonlight · 24/04/2010 13:58

Yes a bit.

We chose Eva because we love it and it has such strong family connections but it has such gains in popularity (esp. the similar names evie, ava etc) that I regret it a bit

But I do love saying it, I think its so pretty

downthecreek · 24/04/2010 13:53

Great name!

jeananddolly · 24/04/2010 13:50

Back of the net!

downthecreek · 24/04/2010 13:47

Is it Gene?

Love the name Gene for a boy and Jean for a girl

jeananddolly · 24/04/2010 13:24

I love my son's name but I realised from when he was a few hours old, that a lot of people don't - so I always feel I have to defend it. For example I can never say 'Name' in response to 'What's his name?' I always have to say NAME N. A. M. E. As in NAME SURNAME (famous well=loved, now dead, star). It also sounds like a girl's name.

It is known, but not that used in this country. It's about 700th on the list.

kimbles1984 · 24/04/2010 13:01

ohhhh ok

hattee · 24/04/2010 13:00

oh, I feel like telling you, but I don't want to out myself. It has been a popular name, but there can't be too many of us that have changed from it. Sorry

kimbles1984 · 24/04/2010 12:47

hattee, what was his original name

hattee · 24/04/2010 12:44

DS's original name has a chavvy reputation too. I only care what other people think about it because I don't like it either. I really feel like I need other people's approval of it, and I certainly neeeded that before the change. Most people seem to like the new name, but it doesn't bother me in the slightest if they don't because I am confident in my own choice. I just don't know what I thinking of to agree to the original

Butterball - my first name is my older sister's middle name and it has never bothered me. In fact I quite like it in a way

kimbles1984 · 24/04/2010 12:12

we do call him Mac unless he is in trouble i really do love Alexander though. I wanted to call my first son Alexander too, but had already had Aidan embroidered on his playmat

Bleatblurt · 24/04/2010 11:57

I love my children's names. My only regret is giving my DS1 the only other name I love as a middle name! We eventually had to cave in and gave DS3 that name as his first name as there was just no other name that felt right.

So now it's a bit odd having two children that 'share' one of the names.

Magaly · 24/04/2010 11:54

I like Mac for short. That isn't easy to classify. I mean, sur name? nic name? It sidesteps the sur name issue.

diddl · 24/04/2010 11:52

What a sad thread!

I still love my children´s names although they are quite popular now I think-were unusual when we used them.

KimblesI´m not keen on Macauley because of the child actor but I don´t think "chavvy" when I hear it.
And I love Mac- have only ever known one.

I also think that the person maketh a chav-not the name.
Both my childrens names have been called "chavvy" on here.

And as I put on another thread-having just returned from a visit from the UK where we were complemented on our children´s manners, politeness and how well they spoke I think I can easily ignore that some people think their names are "chavvy".

DinahRod · 24/04/2010 11:36

Kimbles, Alexander is lovely, think I agree with your secret suspicion with regards to Macauley, although I can also understand why you were drawn to it, it's melodic. Mac as a nn can be cool though.

But if he loves Macauley then you probably can't change it. And people come to shape their names, not the other way round.

Notso, if he leads the drive to change it that's a different matter. But wouldn't rush to do it officially. My brother said he hated his first name at the age of 7, so we all tried using one of his preferred mn for a while but it never stuck and as an adult he's now at 'peace' with it!

notso · 24/04/2010 11:25

I have asked him that a lot Magaly but he's never said so. In fact lots of people complement him on his name.
Two people we know have since had boys and called the Ds's name because they love it so much.

At first I though that maybe there were a lot of Jacobs at nursery so thats why he liked that it but there weren't any.

He says it's the sound of two of the letters he dislikes and he thinks the name doesn't suit him.

He has always had very strong likes and dislikes and reasons for them, for example he will never eat anything shaped like something. I made him teddy bear sandwiches when he was 2 and he said that people weren't supposed to eat bears so could he just have normal sandwiches please.

He said he likes his middle name in the middle and would prefer a new name at the front hattee.

sharbie · 24/04/2010 11:20

oh kimbles i love that name

hattee · 24/04/2010 11:20

I know what you mean kimbles. I can't be objective about DS's original name either now. I know that I didn't like it when I pregnant, and that I like it even less now though.

Agghhh, damn DH. Obviously I should have put my foot down though so it's not entirely his fault

kimbles1984 · 24/04/2010 11:19

mine is nearly 4 too, and i have tried to start calling him Alexander, and he breaks down saying he's Macauley....and starts chanting at me Mummy Alexander,i think he thinks its an insult not a name lol

kimbles1984 · 24/04/2010 11:17

his first name is Macauley, his middle name is Alexander....

DinahRod · 24/04/2010 11:14

Kimbles, what is it?

DD's nn, by which she is known, is increasingly chavvy imo, although obviously didn't think so at the time. Wondering if I ought to increasingly use her full name but of course she loves her name, it's who she is (she's nearly 4) and don't want to confuse her - after all it's my problem, not hers!

LaDiDaDi · 24/04/2010 11:14

What is it kimbles?
