Do you regret your name choice?

I love both DCs names but I sometimes wish I had called DD Hermione, I will always be a little sad that I didn't get to use it. I was luckier with DS as DH couldn't think of a name he liked so I got my way with that one

Anyone else?

No I didn't have PND, but I can see why you are asking. I thought I might for a while as I became very anxious about his name. I felt a million times better after adding in a new first name, and realised that it was the name causing the problem, not PND.

I can't change it again - I just need to move on. I love his new first name and can live with his second name

lucy567 · 30/04/2010 09:28

Hatte just change it by deedpool and then stop thinking about it. Just curious but did you have pnd after your ds was born.

hattee · 30/04/2010 07:18

Oh I need to get a life and stop thinking about his bloody middle name

hattee · 30/04/2010 06:40

I remember when you were discussing changing the spelling PirateJelly. I like your DS's name! I was imagining that it must be awful, until I remembered what is is.

Still it's how you feel about it that counts. I felt the same way about DS's orininal name not suiting me. I didn't like telling people his name, and I was always realy conscious of their reaction. I think people were always surprised that it would be a name I would choose. I always followed up with 'my husband chose it'.

Oh, I wish I had been that little bit braver and had removed it completely. I feel like his name is now fabname rubbishname anotherfabname. Maybe DS will share DH's bad taste and like it. Otherwise he can remove it himself when he is older (there would be no objections from me!)

PirateJelly · 29/04/2010 21:10

I still dislike ds's name ( he's nearly one) dp really liked it and we were struggling to choose a name because the one I liked he hated and we couldn't really agree. I don't know if it was the post birth hormones or the extra strong pain killers I was on, but one day I thought sod it we'll go with your choice it could be cool, even though I didn't really like it when I was pregnant.

I just hate it, it doesn't suit him and just doesn't seem very 'me' either if that makes sense. I've already changed the spelling of it hoping that would help but I still think it sounds weak and girly.

And what else it annoying is when I was pregnant people said oh that's nice and now when I say his name people say nothing, they can't even bring themselves to say that's nice as you do to be polite I know I shouldn't care what others think but like Hatee I care because I need there approval because I'm not confident in it.

MarineIguana · 29/04/2010 20:50

Both our DC have very unusual names. DS's can be shortened to something more normal and I adore both the long and short versions. DD's can't be shortened and that does worry me a bit. I think her name is fantastic but because it is so rare it is taking me a while to get used to (she's just a few weeks old...) But, I have a deep feeling that it does suit her and that it will "sink in" and be perfect for her. Plus they both have middle names they can always use instead.

MamaLazarou · 29/04/2010 20:44

No, not for a single moment. I am convinced that my son's name is the nicest name in the whole world!

It took me a few weeks to get the hang of it, though: when he was new, I kept going to call him various other names such as Julius and Ishmael. On more than one occasion, I actually asked myself out loud, 'What's his name again?'

KleineMaus · 29/04/2010 17:26

I sometimes wonder if I wouldn't have chosen the name I did if I'd known DS2 was going to have such red hair. I really hope it's not a cruelty upon a cruelty in terms of possible bullying at school.

Wolfblass · 28/04/2010 19:39

My dd's name, isn't imaginitive enough i suppose - and for some bizarre reason i gave her a hyphonated first name (like myself )

Don't get me wrong i like it, however thinking back now some of the other names we shortlisted were a little more 'interesting'

My 12 month old sons name though? I wouldn't change it for the world. Even if i did vetoe it 6 years ago.

I suppose i matured and gained taste and confidence

marenmj · 28/04/2010 19:33

she's still too young to have an opinion (16-months). We gave her a very simple, old fashioned middle name if she wants to go by that when she's older.

Honestly, I'm the only person who seems to balk, which is pretty ironic.

kitty75 · 28/04/2010 01:57

Does your DD like it marenmj?

marenmj · 28/04/2010 01:30

Funny, I somewhat regret DD's name. It was my idea, DH latched on and loved it from the first minute and still loves it loves it loves it. He sings it to her, even now that she is getting older. Me, I find I just don't love saying her name aloud and end up using nicknames more often, and then of course I feel rotten for it, since the name was my idea

We get loads of compliments on her name, and everyone seems to adore it but me

barrym · 28/04/2010 01:14

I don't regret DS's name, I think it is the best name and that I am very clever and good for naming him... but not pg with next one and have no clue whatsoever, and feel pressure to come up with equally good name! I'm sure it can't be done!

tortoiseonthehalfshell · 28/04/2010 00:55

Padraig, I did the same thing. My real name is Carly, which is a nice name, I think my Mum has fine taste, but it never ever felt right in my mouth. I remember messing around with the spelling of it (Kali, etc) from when I was 8? And even today, although I like the look of it, it doesn't feel right to me. Too...mimsy.

So I adopted my middle name when I was in Yr 10, and honest to God it changed my life. It helped that a lot of new kids came into the school in Yr 11 and accepted the new name, my family were fine about it, etc. I blossomed. I became a different more confident person. It was...extraordinary.

As for my daughter's name (back on track here) I still love it, but I do think maybe it's not very her. But that's alright, she can make it her own, or change to her middle in turn.

kitty75 · 28/04/2010 00:49

I love DS's first name, but regret his middle name, Callum. DH really likes it though

NormaSknockers · 26/04/2010 09:54

DS name is often misheard because when people (mainly doddery old dears) ask his name & we tell them they smile & say 'Nigel, oh what a lovely name' we just smile & roll our eyes

I adore his name though & it suits him so well, do get a pang about DDs name though.

No name regrets here; both DDs have been given names simply because we loved them or because of the meaning. Middle names were chosen for meaning or memories too.

DD2 was always going to be the name she has but I'm now glad that we didn't call DD1 Bethany (a top contender at the time but DH felt she didn't look like a Bethany!). I still love the name but pronounced with a South London accent would be 'Beff-neeeeeee' which I'm less keen on.

spiderlight · 25/04/2010 23:05

I really like my son's name, everyone else seems to love it and it suits him, but there was another name I loved more, which DH also really liked but persuaded me not to use because he said it wouldn't go with his surname (too alliterative). I can see his point, but as time has gone on I've been less and less convinced by this argument, particularly because in the past three years we've had to say DS's first name and surname out loud about four times at most, so it really wouldn't have mattered. If we do ever have another son, I'm definitely going to use the name - it goes really nicely with DS's name anyway, so it's almost tempting to try for another baby just to have the set! ;)

Barnum · 25/04/2010 22:23

I like my DS names (i have 4) and also my DD but would have preferred to call her somethingelse but DH refused! However, she is unique - so far we've not met another girl with her name

Manda25 · 25/04/2010 11:30

I still love my kids names (19 & 7) and i didn't choose either of them ! My eldest sons name became a little too popular (thanks to the tweenys) but it is still him ....and that's why i love it. I think he would have liked a name a little more weird/cool but think that is because he has friends called Tudor, Titus and Warwick.

Rockbird · 25/04/2010 10:28

I love DD's name.

There was another name that I always swore I would call my daughter but when it came down to it my mother wasn't happy as I have a close relative of the same name and my mother is very much a one of each per family sort of person where possible. Yes we were upset but I am very close to my mother and I care what she thinks. I didn't want any sort of cloud so we gave it her as a second name. I don't regret that decision but sometimes I look at DD and call her that name in my head. But she's very much her own name now and it doesn't sit right.

jellybeans · 25/04/2010 10:12

Still love all my kids names. They all have names that are not in top 20 and quite unusual but not weird.
