Of all the names in the world why would any parent name their precious baby daughter Bo. It is a bloody awful name.

Beau is destined to be laughed at long and hard when he is a teenager.

Loving Expat on this thread.

FanjolinaJolie · 24/04/2010 17:00

Anyone remember Beau from Days of Our Lives....??

Now he was v dreamy.

@ BloomingFlowers

How on Earth do you know your family history all the way back to 1597?

I'm all Irish as far as anyone in the family can remember Although born and (mostly) bred in the UK.

I like Beau as a nickname that would embarrass him in front of friends. I can see myself enjoying that far too much.

MmeLindt · 24/04/2010 16:10

Yes, it is pretentious. And horrible.

Basically everything Expat said.

Bucharest · 24/04/2010 15:56

Horrific.

Only ever known one, and for reasons best known to himself he chose his own nickname- Beau. His real name was Melvin. Which, tbh, on consideration is marginally less hysterical.

Clary · 24/04/2010 15:52

I'm not American!

BTW hellloooo tmmj! Haven't seen you for ages!

cory · 24/04/2010 15:42

Bo is totally different from Beau. The Scandinavian name does not mean 'handsome' and has no redneck connotations. A Swedish Bo is quite likely to be in his sixties, probably rather dull and ordinary, may use a diminutive (Bosse) to make himself slightly more interesting. A bureaucrat's name.

Beau Selecta

BloomingFlowers · 24/04/2010 15:30

I'm all Irish (to 1597); born and bred in Ireland and an French Grandmother thrown in on my Mother's side in the last generation.

I think calling a child "Beau" is dreadful.

I adhered to my Irish naming pattern for my one and only child, and I was proud to do so.

Labelling and naming a child as "Beau"; "beautiful"; seems a dreadful thing/legacy to hang on a child/ a name.

It's a made up name. One that has never existed in times gone bye;
And there's a reason for that.

Because ...It's a stupid name.

It puts a burden on the child from the moment they're born.

A name is a short cut; and Beau can only be a burden. It might be cute when they're 7 weeks old; but it won't be so cute when they're 70 years old.

CinderellaRach · 24/04/2010 15:12

Why ignore your advice if American?Your opinion is your opinion

Btw I'm half Irish half English.

BloomingFlowers · 24/04/2010 15:07

You're all American aren't you ???

I'm Irish (with a naming pattern); and my Husband is Scottish Aristocracy (with a naming pattern).

So what I've just typed is utter garbage. Please feel free to disparage and ignore.

BloomingFlowers · 24/04/2010 15:03

Awful name; go to the back of the class.

What are you thinking ?

When one is pregnant;
One identifies/meets/talks with the Child in the womb;; albeit one way.

No way on God's Earth would a Child ask to be called Beau (Beautiful;) ( ?????)

Your child might be pig ugly. Not in the least bit beautiful .

Calling a child "Beau" opens up a world of abuse if the child isn't beautiful

You don't know that he/she/it is going to be beautiful. It's also a label.

Names don't have to be "different", to be interesting. It's the Person that wears them, that's interesting.

I've met many a "John "that identifies himself by personality/ conduct.

You're thinking "Beau".

I'm thinking awful.

onebatmother · 24/04/2010 14:24

Bo Selecta?

CinderellaRach · 24/04/2010 14:22

Thanks for that redwineplease although if I went ahead and called my son this name surely this is what would be said behind my back?!Hate the thought of people being nasty and taking the mickey.
Although we shouldn't care about what others think I'm sure people hate the thought of being a laughing stock!!It's so difficult!

OP posts:
onebatmother · 24/04/2010 14:22

Haven't we forgotten Bo and Luke Duke? That's expat's argument proven right there.

With added hillbilly points for going phonetic because of not being able to cope with all those vowels.

redwineplease · 24/04/2010 14:17

It's a lovely name, Beau for a boy and Bo for a girl. Never ask anyone elses opinion on names (except, perhaps, husband!)and especially not on MN. Keep them quiet until you introduce child with its name!!

CinderellaRach · 24/04/2010 14:16

So redneck/horse/dog or plain awful...
A few people seem to like it but most don't!
Glad I've asked for op on here before I name my son...
Wish I liked more popular/normal names
Thanks for feedback everyone!

Horse's name (unless short for Boudicea, in which case old english and cool).

tootyflooty · 24/04/2010 13:46

Its quite pretty I know of a girl with that name, but hers is short for bodacia ( not sure if I've spelt that right) but she has always been known as Beau, she is about 7

Clary · 24/04/2010 13:40

I am not keen on Beau (which is deffo a boy's name btw) for the same reason I would avoid Grace.

I know a very graceless Grace.

LOL @ expat btw.

louindevon you are surely kidding about Beau and Belle?

FanjolinaJolie · 24/04/2010 13:11

Louindevon

Brother and sister called Beau and Belle???

Good grief.

Bubbaloo · 24/04/2010 11:53

I know a 3 year old girl named Beau. Not a name I'm keen on tbh

FrazzleRock · 24/04/2010 10:29
